Estimated travel time is 70 minutes

10:10 AM

Break: Mikuma Park along the Mikuma River (Hita City)

This stop is included in one of my best-selling tours, carefully chosen for its atmosphere and location. We will take a short break here for restroom use and a brief photo opportunity. The Mikuma River is the symbolic heart of Hita, historically supporting river transport, daily life, and local commerce, and it remains closely tied to the town’s identity today. Due to the overall schedule, our stay will be short, but I appreciate your understanding and hope you enjoy this glimpse into Hita’s river culture.

- Estimated stay time 20 minutes

10:30 AM

Estimated travel time to next location: 1 hour

11:30 AM

Daikanbō Observatory

Daikanbō Observatory, perched on the rim of Mt. Aso’s outer crater, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the caldera and surrounding peaks. The sweeping scenery of grasslands and volcanic ridges is especially stunning at sunrise or sunset, making it one of Kyushu’s most iconic viewpoints.

Estimated stay time: 30 minutes

12:00 PM

Lunch break included during the estimated 2-hour transfer to the next location

Lunch Time: Soba Restaurant

The Aso region is famous for its pure spring water and cool climate, ideal for cultivating buckwheat. Local soba restaurants serve handmade noodles with a firm texture and delicate aroma, often paired with mountain vegetables or tempura, offering a rustic yet refined taste of Aso’s terroir.

02:00 PM

Aso Sanjo Terminal

This is the volcanic activity monitoring station for Mount Aso. Here we receive official instructions on whether entry to the crater area is permitted. If volcanic gases are present, access may be restricted.

In such cases, we will head to Kikuchi Gorge, a refreshing forest valley with clear streams, moss-covered rocks, and shaded paths—an easy, scenic nature stop ideal for a short walk and fresh air.

The Aso Volcano Crater Observatory

The Aso Volcano Crater Observatory in Japan provides breathtaking views of Mount Aso, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes. Visitors can observe the active crater emitting steam and gases, showcasing its raw volcanic power. The site includes educational displays on geology and safety for a deeper understanding of the area.

-Estimated time spent: 1.5 hour (including Kusasenri Grassland)

Kusasenri Grassland

Kusasenri is a wide grassy plain near Mount Aso, known for its open scenery and views of the active volcano. It’s a popular spot for light trekking, but many guests choose to enjoy a relaxed coffee break while taking in the landscape instead. With this flexible style, the visit is kept short and comfortable, allowing us to enjoy the atmosphere without lingering too long.

Takamori Spring Tunnel Park

Takamori Spring Tunnel Park is a unique underground park created from an unfinished railway tunnel in Takamori. Cool spring water flows through the tunnel year-round, keeping the temperature refreshing even in summer. The softly lit interior features seasonal displays and art installations, making it a relaxing and photogenic stop. It offers an easy, flat walk and a pleasant break from outdoor heat, ideal for a short, comfortable visit.

Reimei Falls offers a quiet, less-visited waterfall surrounded by forest. A short walk leads to the viewing area, making it a calm and photogenic stop without requiring much time or effort.

About Tour Guide Katsu N.

Hi, I’m glad you found my page!

I’m a local guide based in Kyushu who loves sharing the region’s history, food, and landscapes in a relaxed and friendly way. Think of me as someone who can make your trip comfortable and memorable, while keeping things easygoing and fun.

I began guiding to share the history, scenery, and food of my home with visitors from around the world. Before this, I worked in luxury retail, where I learned how important details and genuine hospitality are. Now I bring that same spirit to my tours, making sure every guest feels comfortable, cared for, and free to enjoy their journey.

I specialize in private car tours around Kyushu, so you don’t have to worry about train schedules or carrying luggage. We can stop where you like, take things at your own pace, and enjoy the scenery along the way. Onboard you’ll have free Wi-Fi, music, and a comfortable ride—perfect for families, couples, or friends who want both convenience and a touch of luxury.

Some of my favorite places to share are:

Nagasaki: Peace Park, Atomic Bomb Museum, and the city’s cultural blend

Fukuoka: Dazaifu Shrine, city highlights, and Yanagawa’s river cruise with eel dishes

Kumamoto: Mt. Aso’s volcanic views, Kumamoto Castle, and Kurokawa Onsen

Oita: Hita’s riverside town, plus Beppu and Yufuin hot springs

Saga: Arita’s ceramics and the Yoshinogari ancient site

Takachiho Gorge: A mystical canyon tied to Japanese legends

What I enjoy most is helping guests discover both famous sights and hidden corners of Kyushu, while keeping the experience comfortable and stress-free. Whether you’re drawn to culture, food, history, or beautiful scenery, I can adjust the plan to match your style.

I’d love to share my part of Japan with you and create memories that last long after your trip. If you have any questions or requests, please feel free to send me a message. I look forward to welcoming you to Kyushu and showing you what makes this region so special!

Reviews

Professional and Caring

Katsuhisa was extremely professional and communicative throughout our trip. He kept us updated on weather conditions and checked in about preferences before our journey began. Despite our very ambitious itinerary - which includes about 6 hours of driving in a single day - Katsuhisa fulfilled all of our requests with a positive attitude and no complaints. We were also traveling with our 2-year-old, and Katsuhisa took extra care to ensure our little one was comfortable and happy. At the end of our trip, Katsuhisa even surprised us by buying a thoughtful adorable gift for our child. We truly appreciate how Katsuhisa made our trip extra special. Joining his tour was definitely the highlight of our time in Japan.

Thank you very much for your warm and kind review. I am truly grateful for your thoughtful words, and I am delighted to hear that you were satisfied with the tour.///Under Japanese road traffic regulations, child seats are required in private vehicles and rental cars, so I am glad that having one prepared was helpful during your trip.///I was also pleased to hear that your child was able to enjoy the tour comfortably. Traveling with a young child can involve many considerations, but I am happy that your family was able to enjoy the journey together in a relaxed and pleasant manner. I also have a family member who works as a childcare professional, and I benefit greatly from their advice in situations like these.///Kyushu Island still has many wonderful places to explore, and I would be very happy to welcome you again in the future.///Warm regards,///Katsuhisa

Exploring Kyushu off the beaten track

We were interested in the period between 1850 to 1900 during Japan modernization as well as exploring the beautiful Kyushu geography. Katsu did a lot of research to make sure we went to Hagi castle as well as some of the houses of the Samurai who helped in the revolution. He also made sure we had a great lunch within our dietary guidelines. We used translations on occasion to augment his English

Hi Jack and Jennifer,/// Thank you very much for posting the review. And regarding the language, my apologies for the light mistakes. /// Hagi and Taketa are not areas I usually cover, and since my major was geography, I did my best with the research. However, some of the historical terms did not fully stick in my head, so I may have caused some inconvenience. However, I believe there were no language issues in places like Mt. Aso and Takachiho, so I would appreciate your understanding. /// I will continue in my reply to the Nagasaki tour review.
