Hiroshima Tour Reviews

What a great day - Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

We were very fortunate to have stumbled onto Mayumi as our guide for the day. Communication was great from the start (coordinated day before via WhatsApp) and met us at the station to start our day. In 7.5 hours we covered an extensive amount of places in both Miyajima and Hiroshima - various temples and shrines, museums, peace park, and lots of alleys and streets that we would never have found on our own. Mayumi's detailed knowledge and excellent command of English was appreciated by our entire family. She also managed to keep us on track time wise while also squeezing in some downtime for a mid-afternoon snack to break up the day. I'd highly recommend Mayumi to anyone looking to experience these areas.

Great day experiencing Hiroshima

Mayumi is amazing and so kind. She gave us such a fun day experiencing Miyajoima and Hiroshima! We started the day on Miyajima island where Mayumi was able to show us beautiful cultural icons, but also let us do some great shopping and experience the food and drinks of the region. I really appreciated her patience with us wanting to shop and eat and drink so often! Definitely have her show you all the delicious lemon offerings and eat the oysters! Hiroshima was a bit more somber (as it should be), and it was really nice to experience the history with a local. Mayumi was able to show us the perspective on the devastation from someone born in Hiroshima to parents that directly experienced the fallout from the bomb, but never made me feel badly about it (and believe me, as an American, you feel a serious level of icky seeing what was done). She was so gracious to take us shopping for Sake at the end of the day, too! Thank you so much for everything, Mayumi!

Dear Natalie, I was thrilled to receive your excellent review. Even though I had some trouble on the tour day and was late, your generosity in accommodating the situation was greatly appreciated. How did you like the lemon sake? Next time I would like to try some too Lol. Thank you so much again. Best, Mayumi

A Sensational Day With Mayumi

From her prompt, helpful booking communications, throughout the memorable day we spent together, Mayumi could not have done more to elevate our experience. As a photography hobbyist, I was eager to shoot the famous “floating” torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine before the tide receded. We thought our cruise ship’s late-morning docking might make it a close call. But when Mayumi met us at the pier, she had a taxi standing by for our drive to the ferry. A fast-boat run put us on Miyajima Island with time to spare. Smart planning. I was champing at the bit to point my lens at the O-Torii, but Mayumi gently slowed me down to take in the shrine. The sight of a Shinto priest at prayer beneath softly glowing lanterns yielded some of my favorite captures from our time in Japan. Mayumi introduced us to other delights like the 500 knit-cap statues at Daisho-in Temple, and Miyajima’s free-roaming deer. (Condolences to the tourist we saw lose a bite from her unfolded map to a hungry doe.) After finding us a perfect light lunch, Mayumi led us back to Hiroshima via ferry, tram, and subway as only a local could. Having grown up in Hiroshima and spent time in the States, she speaks perfect English, is deeply knowledgeable on all things Hiroshima, and kept us fully engaged with illuminating anecdotes, a lively sense of humor, and her openness to answering any question we asked. Her insights into Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park – from the A-Bomb Dome to the Children’s Peace Monument and story of Sadako Sasaki, to the Peace Flame and Memorial Cenotaph – immeasurably broadened our understanding of Hiroshima’s quest for an end to war. I doubt we’ll ever forget our visit to the Hypocenter plaque outside Shima Hospital or views of the dome from atop Orizuru Tower, where she showed us how to fold paper cranes for release into the Orizuru Wall. Mayumi's generosity, expertise, and wonderful company enriched our lives. Thank you, Mayumi!

Jack K.

Dear Jack, I don't know how to express my gratitude for such compliments. I was also grateful for your prompt and thoughtful messages each time. The day I spent with you two was also a very delightful and enjoyable time. I can't thank you enough. I saw some of your awesome photos in the URL printed on your card you kindly gave me, and I was very much impressed by your beautiful works. I look forward to seeing more photos especially taken in Japan (chuckle). May you and Carrie live a happy and peaceful life forever. Thank you so much, Jack and Arigato Gozaimashita. Best, Mayumi

Central Hiroshima and Okonomiyaki (Local Food) Tour

First up, I bring you to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Hiroshima is well known as the first city in the world history, that was atomic bombed. You may walk and drop by at many spots built to commemorate those who perished in those days and learn more at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. After that study tour, we roam around Central Hiroshima (the busiest street for shopping) and finally arrive at Okonomiyaki restaurant for early supper. Okonomiyaki is Hiroshima's soul food; a savory pancake filled with chopped vegetables, meat, sea food, noodle, egg and whatever you want, even cheese... Actually this is the origin of the name of Okonomiyaki, since Okonomi literally means "as you like" and yaki means grilled. Fun to see how to make on a huge iron plate and exciting to eat with a special tool (Kote). Just give it a try.
