I have had the opportunity to visit various countries, including Japan, the United States, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
After retiring, I worked as a volunteer guide for city walks in Kagoshima for eight years and obtained my certification as a certified guide for the World Heritage Sites in Kagoshima Prefecture. The joy of traveling overseas is getting to know different cultures, languages, and the unique lifestyles and food cultures of the people. However, what is most valuable to me are the memories made meeting people during travels.

“Not our favorite tour”
Of 8 private tours we booked on a recent (cruise) visit to Japan, this was our least favorite. All 6 of us found our guide a nice guy who tried his best but was very difficult to understand. His English was heavily accented, his vocabulary more limited than other guides, and he spoke so softly that he was often inaudible. While we did all the things we planned to do, there was a passivity in the way he led the tour -- often not recognizing the group's desire to move on from a particular spot - which resulted in people wandering off on their own.

Kagoshima is blessed with many volcanoes, a mild climate and a lot of rain. People have survived on barren volcanic ash plateaus. Currently, the agricultural products are number one in Japan every year and marine resources are also abundant. Relatively close ancestors started the industrial revolution along with the social revolution for modernization in Japan. Western countries hailed this as an oriental miracle.
