The Great Buddha is the iconic symbol of Kamakura, located in the western part of the city. It was established in the 13th century. It is a seated statue made of bronze, 11 meters in height.

It was housed in a large temple building when it was built, but the building is said to have been destroyed by a great earthquake and tsunami in the 15th century. Since then, it has sat outside facing the ocean. The Great Buddha appears to be smiling gently, which is very soothing.

Hasedera Temple was established in the 8th century and is one of the oldest temples in Kamakura.

In the Main Hall, the famous Eleven-headed Kannon Statue is housed. It measures 9.18 meters tall, which makes it one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan.

This temple is famous for beautiful flowers all year round. In the rainy season, over 2,000 hydrangeas of 40 different kinds are in full bloom. They are incredibly beautiful!

You can also enjoy the best views of the Kamakura townscape and the Pacific Ocean from the observation deck of the temple.

At the center of town lies Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. It was established about 1,000 years ago. The first shogun moved the shrine to this spot. Since then, it has been the 'spiritual heart' of the samurai.

It is very famous for yabusame, or horseback archery events, held twice a year. The archers who wear traditional samurai attire shoot three arrows at targets while galloping on horseback. It is a sacred ritual, but it is exciting and dynamic to watch.

The approach to the shrine is called Wakamiya-ohji Street, and it is a very popular spot for cherry blossom viewing.
