Hokokuji temple
Hokokuji Temple, one of Kamakura’s most peaceful Zen temples. Founded in 1334, it belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.
The temple is best known for its beautiful bamboo grove, which contains around 2,000 Moso bamboo trees. As you walk through the grove, you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere, the gentle sound of the wind through the bamboo, and a sense of calm that reflects the spirit of Zen.
Hōkoku-ji is often called the “Bamboo Temple” and offers a unique combination of history, nature, and spiritual tranquility. It is an ideal place to experience the beauty and peacefulness of traditional Japanese culture.
Jomyoji temple
Jomyoji Temple is one of Kamakura’s oldest and most important Zen temples. Founded in 1188, it is the fifth temple of the famous Kamakura Gozan, or “Five Great Zen Temples,” which played a central role in the development of Zen Buddhism in medieval Japan.
One of the highlights of this temple is the traditional tea house, Kisen-an, where guests can enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets while overlooking a tranquil garden.
Jomyoji offers a quieter and less crowded experience than many of Kamakura’s more famous temples. It is an excellent place to appreciate the harmony of history, nature, and Zen culture.
Sugimotodera temple
Welcome to Sugimotodera temple, traditionally regarded as the oldest temple in Kamakura. It was founded in 734, long before Kamakura became the political center of Japan.
One of the most famous sights of Sugimotodera is its beautiful stone staircase covered with moss. Although visitors are no longer allowed to walk on the historic steps in order to protect them, the view has become an iconic image of Kamakura and is especially beautiful during the rainy season.
“While many visitors come to Kamakura for the Great Buddha or famous Zen temples, Sugimotodera offers a glimpse into an even older period of Japanese history. The temple’s moss-covered staircase and centuries-old traditions create a truly timeless atmosphere.”
Tusrugaoka Hachimangu shrine
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine is the most important Shinto shrine in Kamakura and the spiritual center of the city.
The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of warriors and the protector of Japan. Because of this connection, Hachiman was especially revered by the samurai class.
As you approach the shrine, you will walk along Dankazura, a raised pathway lined with cherry trees. During spring, it becomes one of Kamakura’s most popular cherry blossom viewing spots. The wide staircase leading to the main hall offers a magnificent view of the city and, on clear days, all the way to the sea.

This period was characterized by the rise of the samurai class and the establishment of a feudal system. It was also marked by both the patronage of Buddhism by the ruling class and the rise of new Buddhist movements that catered to the spiritual needs of the samurai and common people alike.
