Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple
Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple has a long and interesting history. It was first built in Asakusa over 400 years ago.
After a great fire in the 17th century, the Samurai Government moved the temple to this area. In the early 20th century, a great earthquake destroyed the building, so it was rebuilt with its unique and beautiful design.
It is the perfect place to start our journey into the history of Tsukiji.
Tsukiji Outer Market
The name "Tsukiji" literally means "reclaimed land." After a great fire in the 17th century, the city needed more space, so the sea was filled in to create this new district. This is how Tsukiji began.
About 100 years ago, the fish market was established here. It was the heart of Tokyo's seafood trade until 2018, when the wholesale market moved to Toyosu. However, the soul of Tsukiji did not move!
Today, the lively atmosphere remains unchanged. The Outer Market is still full of energy with more than 400 shops and restaurants. You can find everything from professional kitchenware to fresh ingredients. From early morning, you can enjoy a variety of delicious seafood, such as sushi, sashimi bowls, and tempura.
Namiyoke Jinja Shrine
Namiyoke Shrine was built about 400 years ago during the construction of this reclaimed land. "Namiyoke" means "protection from waves." It was established to pray for safety and successful work in this area.
The shrine is famous for two giant lion heads—one red and one black. In the past, people carried these lions during festivals to clear away clouds and waves.
You can also see several "Tsuka" (memorial mounds) here. These are built to honor the spirits of the ingredients we eat, such as fish, shrimp, and even eggs. It shows the deep respect Japanese people have for the food that sustains our lives.
Ending Point
Tsukiji or Ginza (Your Choice of Destination)
