Early Morning Yokosuka: Uraga Red Brick Dock & Japan’s Maritime Heritage Tour with a Licensed Guide
Yokosuka, located between Tokyo Bay and Sagami Bay, is home to Uraga — the historic port where U.S. Navy officer Matthew Perry arrived in 1853, marking Japan’s opening to the world.
Completed in 1899, Uraga Red Brick Dock was used to build and repair more than 1,000 ships and remains the only surviving brick dry dock of its kind in Japan. On this tour, you will not only explore this historic maritime site but also enjoy a relaxing seaside walk and discover the charm of the local port town.

Uraga Red Brick Dock Guided Tour
We will join the Japanese-language guided tour of the Uraga Red Brick Dock organized by the Yokosuka City Guide Association, an organization dedicated to introducing the natural beauty and historical heritage of Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula to both local residents and visitors from outside the region.
Completed in 1899, this massive brick dry dock is the only one of its kind still existing in Japan. With over 100 years of history, its impressive scale and weathered brick walls create an atmosphere reminiscent of ancient ruins.
During the 1 to 1.5-hour tour, we will visit the historic red brick dock and the adjacent Uraga Local History Museum.
The dock closed in 2003 and is now open only during special events and guided tours, making this a rare opportunity to experience Japan’s industrial modernization up close. The guided tour itself is conducted in Japanese; however, as a nationally licensed English-speaking guide, I will provide explanations and interpretation in English throughout the visit.
Nishi Kano Shrine
A historic shrine founded in 1181. It is said that prayers offered here were fulfilled, giving rise to the name “Kano,” which means “wish granted.”
The current main hall, rebuilt in 1842, is decorated with more than 230 intricate carvings. The dragon sculpture and the powerful guardian figures are particularly impressive.
It is believed that visiting both Nishi-Kano Shrine (West) and Higashi-Kano Shrine (East) enhances blessings for relationships and good fortune.
Uraga Ferry: A Short Three-Minute Boat Ride with 300 Years of History
The symbolic ferry connecting the east and west sides of Uraga has been operating for about 300 years.
This short three-minute ride offers charming harbor views, including the giant cranes of Uraga Dock and the peaceful port town scenery.
There is no fixed timetable — when the ferry is on the opposite shore, simply press the call button.
Fare: Adults 400 JPY; Children (elementary and junior high school students) 200 JPY.
Higashi Kano Shrine
Located on the eastern shore, Higashi-Kano Shrine (East) pairs with Nishi-Kano Shrine (West).
Here, you can receive a charm pouch to complete a special lucky amulet begun at Nishi-Kano Shrine. Together, they are believed to bring blessings for relationships, work, and friendships.
This shrine is also associated with Katsu Kaishu (1823–1899), who is said to have practiced ascetic training here before crossing the Pacific Ocean aboard the Kanrin Maru in 1860.
It is believed to grant blessings for maritime safety, success, and good fortune.
Kannonzaki Park and Kannonzaki Lighthouse
Located at the entrance to Tokyo Bay, Kannonzaki Park offers beautiful coastal scenery and expansive ocean views. The area has long been an important strategic point for maritime traffic and coastal defense.
Kannonzaki Lighthouse, first built in 1869, was Japan’s first Western-style lighthouse. The current structure stands as a symbol of Japan’s modernization and maritime history. From the lighthouse area, you can enjoy sweeping views of Tokyo Bay and watch large ships passing through one of the world’s busiest sea lanes.
The park’s walking trails, rocky shoreline, and seasonal greenery provide a refreshing contrast to the historic dock and port town atmosphere.
Yokosuka Museum of Nature and Humanities & Observation Deck
This local museum offers an engaging introduction to Yokosuka’s natural environment and rich history. The exhibits explore the geology of the Miura Peninsula, local wildlife, and the region’s maritime heritage. You can also learn how Yokosuka developed as an important port city from the Edo period through Japan’s modernization.
After viewing the exhibits, we will head up to the observation deck for panoramic views of Tokyo Bay. From here, you can watch ships navigating one of the world’s busiest sea routes and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding coastline.
Admission is free.
Ending Point
Yokosuka Chuo Station (Keikyu Line)
