History of Tokyo Bay
Tokyo Bay, once known as Edo Port, was an important hub that supplied daily goods to the people of Edo, the old name for Tokyo.
In the mid-19th century, when Japan opened to the world, five ports—Hakodate, Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, and Niigata—were designated as international trade ports.
However, Edo was not opened due to national defense concerns, and it missed the opportunity to develop as a modern international port.
After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, modern port development began. New wharves such as Hinode, Shibaura, and Takeshiba were constructed, and Tokyo Port gradually grew into a major harbor. It officially opened to foreign trade in 1941.
During the global container shipping revolution of the 1960s, Tokyo Port quickly adopted container transport. In 1967, Japan’s first full container ship arrived at Shinagawa Pier, marking a major step in its development as an international trading port.
Today, Tokyo Port continues to play an important role in supporting the city’s economy and daily life.
Rainbow Bridge Walk
The bridge is approximately 1.7 kilometers long and takes about 30 minutes to cross at a comfortable pace. From the walkway, you can enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo Bay and the city skyline. On clear days, the scenery is truly breathtaking. Take your time, feel the sea breeze, and don’t forget to look back — the views change beautifully as you walk.
No.6 Battery (View from Rainbow Bridge)
As we walk across the Rainbow Bridge, the first historic island we see is the Sixth Battery. The word “Odaiba” comes from the Japanese word daiba, meaning a coastal cannon battery. In 1853, after the arrival of American naval officer Commodore Matthew Perry and his Black Ships in Edo Bay, the Tokugawa Shogunate urgently began building coastal fortifications to defend Edo (old Tokyo). Within about one year, the shogunate constructed 11 batteries in Tokyo Bay. Today, only two of them still remain. On this tour, we will see both of these historic sites — the Sixth Battery and the Third Battery.
Daiba Park (Site of the Third Battery)
The Third Battery is the best-preserved of the original Odaiba fortifications and is now open to the public as Daiba Park.
Here, visitors can walk inside the former fortress and see the original stone walls that once supported cannons facing Tokyo Bay. Although the batteries were never used in battle, they symbolize Japan’s urgent efforts to strengthen its coastal defenses during the final years of the samurai government.
Today, Daiba Park offers a fascinating contrast between Edo-period military history and the modern skyline of Tokyo Bay.
Shopping & Entertainment Area (Decks Tokyo Beach & Aqua City Odaiba)
After crossing the Rainbow Bridge, we explore Odaiba’s lively waterfront shopping and entertainment area, including Decks Tokyo Beach and Aqua City Odaiba. These popular complexes offer a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cafés, and entertainment facilities overlooking Tokyo Bay.
Inside Decks Tokyo Beach, we can visit the nostalgic Daiba 1-chome Shotengai, an indoor shopping street that recreates the atmosphere of Japan in the 1950s and 1960s. The retro-style streets are lined with vintage signs, small shops, and traditional candy stores, offering a fun glimpse into Japan’s Showa-era culture.
Decks Tokyo Beach is also home to the Odaiba Takoyaki Museum, where several famous takoyaki shops from Osaka gather in one place. Here visitors can try different styles of takoyaki, the popular Japanese street food made of batter balls filled with octopus and topped with savory sauce.
From the rooftop Seaside Terrace and nearby waterfront areas, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of Tokyo Bay and the Rainbow Bridge, making this a perfect place to relax, explore, and take photos during our Odaiba visit.
The Statue of Liberty in Odaiba
It was first installed in 1998 to celebrate Japan’s friendship with France and became a permanent landmark in 2000 due to its popularity. Statues of Liberty can also be found in Shimoda and Osaka.
Nearby, you may also catch the “Aqua Symphony,” one of the largest fountain shows in the world, featuring music, lights, and dynamic water displays. If the timing is right, we may enjoy this short but impressive show together.
BMW Café at BMW Group Tokyo Bay
Open weekdays 11:00–19:00, weekends and holidays 10:00–19:00.
Enjoy coffee in partnership with Nespresso, along with light meals such as toast and sandwiches. Visitors interested in BMW showrooms in Japan will enjoy a stop here.
The Soya (Antarctic research vessel) & Tokyo International Cruise Terminal
Step aboard the historic Soya, Japan’s first Antarctic research vessel, now preserved as a museum ship. Built in 1938, she survived wartime service and later supported Japan’s Antarctic expeditions, becoming a symbol of resilience and exploration. Admission is free, and you can walk through the decks and cabins to experience life at sea in extreme conditions.
After your visit, we will head to the nearby Tokyo International Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway welcoming luxury cruise ships from around the world. From the observation deck, enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, including the Rainbow Bridge and the city skyline.
This contrast between a pioneering expedition ship and a sleek international terminal beautifully highlights Japan’s journey from postwar recovery to a global maritime hub.
Miraikan Museum (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation)

Thank you very much for your kind review. I truly appreciate it. We were lucky to have such beautiful weather, which made it perfect for walking around the city. Seeing both of you enjoying the tour so much made me feel very happy and positive as well. It was a great honor for me to guide you through Yokohama, a city that I truly love. I would be delighted if you visit Minato Mirai again in the future. Yokohama is a place where history and the future come together. I hope that as you experienced the city, you could also reflect on the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853, and how that moment connects to the way we live today and in the future. Thank you again, and I hope to see you again someday!
