Zenkokuji Temple (Bishamonten – God of Fortune & Protection)

Visit Zenkokuji Temple, one of Kagurazaka’s most iconic landmarks, known for enshrining Bishamonten, the Buddhist god of fortune, wealth, and protection. Founded in 1595 during the late samurai era, the temple has over 400 years of history and has long been a spiritual center for locals.

Originally established elsewhere in Edo (old Tokyo), the temple was relocated to Kagurazaka after a series of fires, and it has remained here ever since, growing alongside the town’s prosperity.

Bishamonten is one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan and is believed to bring good fortune, success in business, and protection from misfortune. Because of this, the temple has been widely worshipped since the Edo period as “Kagurazaka’s Bishamonten.”

As you enter, you’ll notice the striking red gate and unique tiger statues guarding the entrance—symbols associated with Bishamonten. The temple is also known as one of the “Three Great Bishamonten of Edo,” making it an important cultural and spiritual site.

Watch locals quietly praying for good luck and success.

Kagurazaka Backstreets & Local Temples

Take a stroll through Kagurazaka’s narrow alleys, where traditional houses, small temples, and local shops create a unique atmosphere.

Along the way, you may find charming cafés, traditional sweets shops, and small boutiques that reflect the neighborhood’s character.

As we explore the backstreets, we will visit several local temples that offer insight into everyday Japanese Buddhist practices.

At Ryumonji Temple, enjoy the calm atmosphere of a neighborhood temple rooted in the area’s history.

We will also visit Enpukuji Temple, known for its focus on repentance (sange) and memorial services. Here, you can learn about the idea of reflection and prayers for peace of mind, an important aspect of Japanese spiritual culture.

Some temples in the area even hide unexpected cultural spots—for example, one temple even has a Samurai theater located in its basement, offering live performances and hands-on experiences such as armor wearing and sword practice (optional).

Anyoji Temple (Zeniarai Money-Washing Experience)

Visit Anyoji Temple, a quiet and historic temple tucked away in the charming streets of Kagurazaka. The temple is believed to have been founded by Ennin (794–864), a prominent Buddhist monk and disciple of Saichō, the founder of Tendai Buddhism.

According to historical records, the temple originally stood within the grounds of Edo Castle, but was relocated to its current location when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his rule in Edo (Tokyo). Although the temple grounds have become smaller over time, its location remains unchanged, preserving a strong sense of history.

One of the highlights of this temple is the unique “zeniarai” (money-washing ritual). Visitors can wash their coins in sacred water with the belief that it will bring financial luck and prosperity. This hands-on cultural experience is both fun and meaningful, offering a glimpse into everyday Japanese spiritual practices.

Take a moment to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, learn about its long history, and try this traditional ritual for good fortune.

Ayumi Gallery (Historic Architecture & Contemporary Art Space)

Visit Ayumi Gallery, a hidden cultural gem in Kagurazaka where art, architecture, and history come together. This small gallery is located on the ground floor of a unique wooden building that blends Japanese and British design elements, creating a warm and distinctive atmosphere.

The building itself was constructed in 1953 as the atelier of architect Hiroshi Takahashi, who studied architecture in the UK. Its charming half-timbered style reflects this international influence, making it quite different from typical Japanese buildings.

In 2011, the structure was officially designated as a registered cultural property, recognizing its architectural and historical value.

Since opening as a gallery in 1984, Ayumi Gallery has served as a creative space where artists and visitors can connect. Exhibitions change regularly, featuring a wide range of contemporary artworks by both emerging and established artists.

Step inside to experience a cozy, intimate gallery space filled with natural materials such as wood and plaster, and enjoy discovering local art in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

La Kagu (Design, Lifestyle & Café Experience)

Visit La Kagu, a stylish cultural complex that beautifully blends architecture, design, and everyday lifestyle. Located at the top of Kagurazaka hill, this unique space was originally built in the 1960s as a warehouse for a publishing company and later transformed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. It was renovated and reopened in 2014 as a lifestyle shop.

One of the most striking features is the large wooden staircase at the entrance, which seamlessly connects the street to the building. Designed to feel like natural terrain, it symbolizes the connection between the city, architecture, and people.

Inside, La Kagu offers a curated lifestyle experience featuring food items, tableware, cooking tools, beauty products, and a café—all under one roof. The concept centers on Japanese daily life and seasonal living, with a focus on food culture and simple pleasures. You can browse carefully selected items, discover Japanese design aesthetics, or relax with coffee and light meals in a modern yet cozy atmosphere.

The space also hosts events such as markets, exhibitions, and talks, making it a lively hub where locals and visitors come together.

Enjoy exploring this creative space where tradition meets modern life, and experience a different side of Tokyo through design, food, and everyday culture.

Akagi Shrine (Modern Shrine Architecture & Local Spiritual Life)

Visit Akagi Shrine, a unique Shinto shrine that beautifully combines traditional spirituality with modern design. Originally founded in 1300, the shrine has long been a place of worship for the local community in Kagurazaka.

What makes this shrine especially distinctive is its striking contemporary architecture, redesigned in 2010 by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The main hall features clean lines, natural materials, and large glass elements, creating a bright and open atmosphere rarely seen in traditional shrines. This harmonious blend of old and new reflects modern Tokyo’s evolving identity.

Akagi Shrine is dedicated to a deity believed to bring good fortune, success, and protection, and it remains an active place of worship for local residents. Visitors can observe how people pray, make offerings, and purchase charms for luck and safety.

The shrine grounds also include a stylish café and community spaces, making it a lively gathering place where tradition meets everyday life.

Take time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, admire the innovative architecture, and experience how spirituality continues to be part of daily life in Japan.

Tokyo Daijingu Shrine (Famous for Love & Matchmaking)

Visit Tokyo Daijingu Shrine, one of Tokyo’s most famous Shinto shrines, widely known as a power spot for love and matchmaking. Often called “O-Ise-sama in Tokyo,” the shrine enshrines the same deities as the Grand Shrine of Ise, allowing people to receive its blessings without traveling far.

Established in 1880 during the Meiji era, the shrine was originally built so that people in Tokyo could worship Ise’s sacred deities locally. It later moved to its current location in Iidabashi after the Great Kanto Earthquake, continuing its long history as an important spiritual site.

Today, Tokyo Daijingu is especially popular among visitors seeking good relationships, marriage, and harmony in life. In fact, it is known as the place where Japan’s first Shinto-style wedding ceremony was held, making it a symbolic destination for couples and those hoping to find love.

As you explore the shrine grounds, you will see colorful ema (wooden prayer plaques) and can try an omikuji fortune (available in English) to discover your luck in love. Many visitors also purchase charming amulets for relationships and happiness.

Take a moment to observe how locals pray, make wishes, and connect with traditional beliefs that continue to play an important role in modern Japanese life.

Kitanomaru Park (Nature Walk & Imperial History)

Visit Kitanomaru Park, a spacious and peaceful green park located just north of the Imperial Palace. This area was once part of Edo Castle, the residence of the Tokugawa shoguns, and still retains a strong sense of historical significance.

Today, the park offers a refreshing escape from the busy city, with wide walking paths, lush greenery, and seasonal flowers. It is especially beautiful throughout the seasons, offering fresh greenery in spring and summer, colorful leaves in autumn, and a peaceful atmosphere in winter.

As you stroll through the park, you can enjoy views of moats, stone walls, and the natural landscape that once formed part of the castle’s defenses. The contrast between history and nature creates a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

Kitanomaru Park is also home to several cultural venues, including the Nippon Budokan and The National Museum of Modern Art, making it a place where history, culture, and everyday life come together.

Take a leisurely walk, enjoy the fresh air, and experience a quieter side of Tokyo surrounded by both nature and history.
