Carrot Tower Observation Deck

Enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo from a hidden observation spot loved by locals.

Located on the top floor of Carrot Tower in Sangenjaya, this observation deck offers a surprisingly wide view over Tokyo’s residential neighborhoods. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of distant landmarks such as Mt. Fuji.

Unlike major observation decks, this spot is quiet and uncrowded, providing a relaxed atmosphere where you can take in the city at your own pace. It’s a perfect place to pause during the tour and appreciate Tokyo from above.

From here, you can also see the route of the Tokyu Setagaya Line, the charming tram featured in this tour, offering a unique perspective on the local area you have just explored—a great photo opportunity.

This stop adds a refreshing contrast to the temples and streets below—an opportunity to enjoy open views, take photos, and reflect on your journey through Setagaya.

Gotokuji Temple

Visit a unique temple known as the birthplace of the famous “lucky cat” (maneki-neko), a symbol of good fortune in Japan.

Gotokuji Temple is said to be the origin of the beckoning cat legend, which has spread across Japan and beyond. According to the story, a feudal lord was saved from a sudden thunderstorm after following a cat that appeared to be inviting him into the temple. In gratitude, the temple became associated with good luck and prosperity.

Today, the grounds are filled with hundreds of small white lucky cat statues, each one placed by visitors wishing for success, happiness, or protection. The sight of countless cats lined up together creates a truly memorable and photogenic scene.

As you walk through the quiet temple grounds, you can experience a peaceful atmosphere while discovering one of Japan’s most beloved cultural symbols.

Shoin Shrine

Explore a historic shrine dedicated to Yoshida Shōin (1830-1859), one of Japan’s most influential intellectuals at the end of the samurai era.

Yoshida Shōin was a visionary educator and thinker whose ideas helped shape modern Japan. Though he lived a short life, his teachings inspired many leaders who later played key roles in the country’s transformation during the 19th century.

The shrine offers a calm and reflective atmosphere, surrounded by trees and a charming local neighborhood. Nearby, you’ll find a traditional shopping street with small cafes and local shops, giving you a glimpse into everyday life in Tokyo.

This visit provides not only historical insight but also a chance to experience a more authentic, community-centered side of the city.

Lu Guan (Handmade Taiwanese steamed buns)

Enjoy a special food experience at Lu Guan, the only sister shop in Japan of a famous Taiwanese restaurant known for its long lines.

This beloved shop traces its roots to a long-established eatery in Taiwan, where customers line up daily for its signature meat buns. Here in Tokyo, you can taste the same authentic flavors without leaving Japan.

Freshly made and packed with juicy filling, the handmade buns are simple yet deeply satisfying. This stop offers a perfect break during the tour and a chance to experience a popular taste of Taiwan in a local Tokyo setting.

Setagaya Local History Museum

Discover the history and culture of Setagaya at this small but insightful local museum. The exhibits showcase everyday life in the area, traditional tools, and the development of the neighborhood over time.

You can also explore outdoor displays, including traditional Japanese houses, offering a glimpse into the past in a peaceful, open-air setting.

This stop provides a deeper understanding of Tokyo beyond the typical tourist spots, enriching your overall experience. Free admission.

Todoroki Valley & Fudo Temple: Nature and Spiritual Calm in Tokyo

Discover a peaceful green oasis at Todoroki Valley, the only natural valley in central Tokyo. Just a short walk from the station, step into a serene world of lush greenery and a gently flowing stream.

Stroll along the shaded path, cross small bridges, and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere away from the city’s crowds. Along the way, visit Todoroki Fudoson Temple, a historic temple nestled in the forest and dedicated to Fudo Myo-o, a Buddhist deity.

From the temple grounds, take in views of the surrounding greenery and experience a moment of quiet reflection. This unique spot offers a harmonious blend of nature, spirituality, and tranquility in the heart of Tokyo.

Kuhonbutsu Jōshin-ji Temple

Discover a hidden spiritual retreat in Tokyo, where history, nature, and Buddhist philosophy come together.

Founded in 1678 during the Edo era by the monk Kaseki Shōnin, this temple is dedicated to the idea of universal salvation. According to tradition, he received a divine message from Amida Buddha, inspiring him to guide people toward the Pure Land.

The temple is best known for its nine Amida Buddha statues—an exceptionally rare arrangement representing nine levels of rebirth in the Western Paradise. These statues are enshrined in three halls—Upper, Middle, and Lower—each containing three Buddhas with symbolic hand gestures expressing stages of enlightenment.

Visit the Founder’s Hall, where a statue of Kaseki Shōnin is enshrined. He is said to have carved this image himself after seeing his reflection in water, capturing his form in prayer at the age of forty-two. The hall has long been a place to pray for safe childbirth and good fortune, and ceremonies are still held here on the 7th of each month.

Another highlight is the Buddha’s Footprint Stone, created as an early symbol of devotion before Buddha statues became common.

Remarkably, the temple grounds have preserved their original layout since the Edo era, allowing visitors to experience the same spiritual atmosphere as people did over 300 years ago.

As you walk through the quiet gardens and halls, you will encounter the idea of Buddhist compassion—the belief that anyone can reach the Pure Land through faith.

Jiyugaoka: Stylish Streets, Cafés & Local Flavors

Stroll through the charming neighborhood of Jiyugaoka, known for its relaxed atmosphere and European-inspired streets. This popular yet laid-back area is filled with boutique shops, stylish cafés, and local bakeries.

Enjoy exploring narrow lanes lined with unique stores, from handmade goods to fashion and sweets. It’s a perfect place to experience everyday Tokyo life beyond the busy city centers.

Take time to sample local treats, discover hidden cafés, or simply relax and soak in the neighborhood’s cozy vibe. Jiyugaoka offers a delightful mix of shopping, food, and casual strolling.
