The Muromachi Shogunate, which began in the 14th century, established a unique culture in Kyoto supported by the wealth and artistic techniques gained through trade with China. Its typical example is the Golden Pavilion. Each floor of the Pavilion was built in three different architectural styles: palace, Samurai residence, and Zen Buddhist. We will visit the Pavilion, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Nijo-jo Castle, and experience the supreme beauty of different architectural styles and gardens.

Rokuon-ji Temple & Golden Pavilion

#The third shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, built a villa with a gold-leaf-covered Shariden Hall (reliquary Hall, called Golden Pavilion) and a strolling garden centered around the Kyokochi Pond (Mirror Pond).

#After Yoshimitsu's death, the villa was converted into the Zen Buddhist temple Rokuon-ji, named after his posthumous Buddhist name.

Former Imperial Villa Nijo-jo Castle

#In the 17th century, Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan, built Nijo-jo Castle to symbolize the shogunate's prestige and power.

#The Ninomaru Palace was designed with six connected buildings arranged in a diagonal line. Each building with elaborate wall paintings allows visitors to view the same garden, which depicts ancient Chinese scenes with a pond and stones, from different angles.

Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kyoto Gyoen Garden

#For 500 years, since the 14th century, the Palace has served as a venue for solemn ceremonies, a place to entertain distinguished guests, and the emperor's residence.

#More than 10 buildings with different uses are scattered throughout the grounds, in accordance with ancient customs: state ceremonies, study, and a resident palace, etc. The Japanese garden offers views of the Higashiyama Mountain range in the distance.

(Note)We can see the exterior of the building and gardens, but we can't enter them.

#Kyoto Gyoen Garden/The area around the Imperial Palace was once home to many mansions of the Imperial Court Nobles. After the emperor moved to Tokyo, the new government demolished these mansions and developed the area into a park.

I grew up in Osaka, studied urban and transportation planning in Kyoto, and worked for 20 years as an urban planning expert for national and local governments. My career also focused on "city promotion"—attracting businesses and talent by highlighting the appeal and convenience of Japanese cities to international corporate leaders and the media. Later, I obtained the national qualification as a Licensed Guide-Interpreter and have been guiding international tourists on the urban landscapes and history of 3 cities.

Since the 7th century, the place of the Imperial Palace has shifted among 3 cities more than a dozen times. With each move, emperors, court nobles, samurai, and commoners alike built new palaces, temples, shrines, and residential districts, while carrying on traditional customs.

“Great Highlights of Central Kyoto”

We had an excellent tour with Yosshi. I recommend him. He had great communication to create a custom tour for us. He emailed about and researched our sights ahead of time. He arrived early at our hotel lobby. He spoke good English and was very kind. He was very informative about the many sights we visited and came prepared with printouts. He took photos of our family. He took us to the Nijo castle, Imperial Palace and Manga museum. He helped us with ordering lunch. He was very knowledgeable getting around the metro. It made our day a breeze. The day was sunny, the autumn leaves were beautiful, and there weren't many tourists, so I was able to show you ancient, medieval, and early modern sites. “Cultural tour of Kawachi/Osaka ”

Yosshi san created a unique tour to introduce us to the history of Kofun burial mounds and Haniwa clay pottery. We had an amazing day despite the weather visiting Shin-ike Haniwa Factory Park and the Imashirozuka Museum. Yosshi san has amazing knowledge & excellent English and was a pleasure to spend the day with. Also Yosshi san is a master of navigating Osaka transport, very impressed!!
