【Sendai (Miyagi)】The Zao Snow Monsters — Nature’s Spectacular Masterpiece
Snow-covered trees resembling ice sculptures begin to appear in late December. They grow larger through January, and by February, some reach nearly five meters tall, creating a spectacular winter landscape. As temperatures rise, the frost-covered trees gradually disappear around March.
One of their greatest charms is how the scenery changes with the season—from forming ice-covered trees to massive formations at their peak, and finally to their fleeting, melting beauty.

Meeting Point
Sendai Station
- Optionally I can meet you at your hotel (near Sendai downtown) upon request.
Zao Sanroku Station (Sanroku Line)
1 hour and 30 minutes drive from the Sendai downtown, we will reach at the foot of the mountain. From there, we will hop on the gondola lift, and heading to the middle of the mountain (Juhyo Kogen Station), which will take about 7 minutes.
Approximate gondola waiting time at this station will be up to 60 minutes on weekdays.
On the gondola, you can enjoy the panoramatic view of snow-covered trees.
Juhyo Kogen Station (Sancho Line) -> The Summit
We will need to transfer the gondola at the middle of the mountain, Juhyo Kogen Station. From here, we will take another gondola lift to the Summit, which will take about 11 minutes.
As you ride the ropeway, you can witness a dramatic transformation of the landscape. On the Sanroku Line, the trees change from ordinary snow-covered branches into delicate rime-coated trees. As you transfer to the Kogen Line, these "soft rime" trees evolve into massive frost-covered figures, eventually becoming the giant "Snow Monsters" that Zao is famous for.
On the summit, if the weather is nice and has a clear sky, you will be able to enjoy the spectacular panoramatic scenery looking over Yamagata, and most excitingly the herd of "Snow Monsters"!
Their breathtaking beauty draws visitors from around the globe, all eager to witness them with their own eyes.
Back to Zao Sanroku Station & Deaprt for Sendai
Taking the same route backwards, we will be back to the foot of the mountain, Zao Sanroku Station. And, It will take about 1hr 30min drive as well heading back to Sendai.
Ending Point
Sendai Downtown at 2:00 pm

“Very Personalized Service”
We specifically visited Sendai because of our love for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Eiji and his wife accomodated and delivered. We also experienced a genuine vibe where we felt we were being shown around Sendai by friends rather than guide. Highly recommended
