The 1st point

This shrine has long been deeply revered as a deity of warding off misfortune, inviting good fortune, ensuring victory, and granting safe childbirth. It is the oldest building that preserves and conveys the culture of Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600) until today, and then designated as a National Treasure in 1952.

The 2nd point

This temple began in 1283 in Fukushima Prefecture. Each time the Date clan moved their residence, the temple moved with them as well. It relocated to Yamagata Prefecture in 1383, then to northern Miyagi Prefecture in 1590, and finally, in 1600, it moved to its present location in Sendai.

The 3rd point

This shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu as its deity. Tokugawa Ieyasu is the founder of Edo Shogunate, which had been thrived for more than 400 years.

The 4th point

This shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, who showed exceptional academic talent from an early age — composing waka poetry at the age of five and Chinese poems at eleven. Because of his extraordinary abilities, he was called a ‘child prodigy,’ and is therefore widely revered as the deity of learning.

The 5th spot

The shrine enshrines Kagutsuchi-no-Kami, the god of fire, as its principal deity. In addition to being worshipped as a protector against fire, it is also regarded as the guardian deity for those born in the Year of the Dragon and the Year of the Snake, due to having once enshrined Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra). From the hilltop, you can enjoy a panoramic view of downtown Sendai, and the large Tengu statue at the temple gate is a distinctive feature.

The 6th (last) spot

Miyagi Gokoku Shrine, located within the grounds of the Sendai Castle ruins, is a shrine established in the Meiji period. Although it was completely destroyed during the Sendai air raid, it was rebuilt after the war. The current main hall was relocated from the Ise Grand Shrine, and locally, the shrine is known as a New Year’s spot where visitors can view the first sunrise of the year.
