Eat, drink, and discern like a local !
Nagoya city is well known for it's tasty local dishes. Red miso is the go to flavor for many dishes like miso katsu, doteni and doteyaki, miso nikomi udon, and of course, miso soup. Also, there are many local izakaiyas and yakitori (grilled chicken) shops all over the city. Personally, I am most familiar with the Osu-Kannon and Nagoya station areas. Not a fan of large chain shops, so I will show you the truly local shops.

Meeting Point
Nagoya station - - -Nana-chan Doll (giant mannequin)
- Once you're at Nagoya station, make your way to the Meitetsu Department Store on the Sakura Dori side of the station. The giant Nana-chan Doll is in front of the escalator to the Meitetsu Bus Center. Everybody knows Nana-chan Doll, so you could easily get pointed in the right direction.
Cheap and good - - - Yotteba (unfortunately not for vegetarians)
Yotteba Izakaiya is a cheap, and very local izakaiya in the Nagoya station area. Their best dishes, in my opinion, are the chicken wings, offal stew, raw chicken liver, and homemade ground chicken tsukune with egg yolk. And wash all that down with some draft beers, or any of the many other drinks they have to offer. If, by chance, Yotteba is overly crowded, there are loads of other local yakitori shops nearby. Or if yakitori, doesn't sound appealing we could enjoy other options like ramen, or grilled meat (yakiniku).
Subway to the spectacular Osu Kannon Temple area
After enjoying Yotteba, or another local nearby shop, we could walk to Marunouchi Station, which is about a 20 minute walk. Probably, a good idea to walk a bit after eating our fill. Catch the Tsurumai subway line to Osu Kannon (just two stops) - - - if you're up to it, we could walk the whole way, about a 30 minute walk, which would allow us to pass by the Misono-za Kabuki Theater (beautiful building), and see some other local sights along the way. Leave it up to you of course.
The all encompassing Osu Kannon area.
Osu Kannon is an amazing shopping district with over 1200 shops and restaurants. It is known for its electronics shops, second hand clothing shops, J-Pop and Idol goods, anime shops and a lot of Maid Cafes ! And of course, so many food stalls, cafes and restaurants at every corner. I know a few really old local izakaiyas in this area as well, or we could enjoy tidbits from various food stalls throughout the area. Fried chicken, takoyaki, Korean cheese dogs, local Nagoya confectionary snacks (e.g. uiro, or taiyaki), Mitarashi Dango, etc. Let me know what you'd especially like to try, so we can narrow down our wandering and wandering. Let's enjoy !
Ending Point
Osu Shopping Area - - either the Kamimaezu Station side, or the Osu Kannon Station side.

About Tour Guide Charley S.
Konnichiwa - - - Charley here. Originally, I grew up in Los Angeles and San Diego for the first quarter century of my life. In 2000, I moved to Aichi Prefecture, Japan. One of my main goals was to play music with Japanese musicians, particularly in the underground music scene, which I've been a part of throughout my life. Also, I wanted to enjoy and explore the beauty of living in a foreign country. I've been living here for 25 years, and can gladly say that I have been engaged thoroughly in both of those goals. Since the beginning of moving to Japan, I've always chosen to hang out and engage with Japanese people as opposed to other foreigners. I often find myself in izakaiyas and concert events where I am the only foreigner, but fortunately I am on good terms with the staff and other customers. So if you are looking to see the less touristy aspects of Japan, please feel free to get in touch with me and I would love to share what I have come to appreciate about Japan. Cheers !
