The production of India ink stick started at a monastery in Nara in 14C. Today 95% of India ink sticks are made here in Nara. In this tour, you will experience Japanese calligraphy and enjoy making your own ink stick with the guidance of a traditional craftsman. Then you will walk up one of the main streets called Sanjo street and look around other handcraft shops unique to Nara.

Our day in Kyoto with Michiko was simply outstanding. We arrived from Osaka Airport Hotel in the morning a bit tired from our travels, and Michiko managed to perfectly balance our need for a relaxed pace with our desire to see the iconic sights like the Golden Pavilion and Fushimi Inari. She is incredibly structured, professional, and organized, yet her greatest strength is her empathy. She took wonderful care of us, always mindful of our energy levels. A special highlight was the vegetarian lunch she arranged. Because of my wife’s allergies, we are often cautious, but Michiko found a place where the food was spectacular and the team was perfectly prepared. It was one of our best meals in Japan! I was impressed how much you enjoyed not only Kyoto’s iconic temples, shrines, and historic streetscapes, but also the daily lives of the locals you observed along the way. A 24-hour fitness club—that really is something you’d only find in Japan! Also, I’m glad you and your wife enjoyed the lunch so much. Although it wasn’t traditional Japanese cuisine, it might be the most distinctly Japanese in terms of craftsmanship and the spirit of hospitality.
