It was built during a time when Buddhism was first introduced to the country and became closely linked to the formation of the early Japanese state.

Naniwa Palace Site
The Naniwa Palace site was once an important political center in the 7th century. Emperors ruled from here during a time when Japan was building a centralized state inspired by China.
Although only foundations remain today, this open space marks the heart of ancient Osaka.
As we walk through the site, you’ll discover how early urban planning and government systems shaped the city’s development and laid the groundwork for its later importance.
Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks and a powerful symbol of the samurai era.
Built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it represented both military strength and political ambition during a time of national unification.
As we explore the massive stone walls, moats, and castle grounds, you’ll learn how strategy, geography, and power shaped its design.
The castle also marks a turning point in Osaka’s history, when the city became a central stage of political conflict and transformation.
Café Break
We conclude our journey with a relaxing café break near Osaka Castle.
This is a chance to unwind, ask questions, and reflect on how faith, politics, and military power shaped the city over time.
Over coffee or tea, we’ll connect the stories from Shitennoji Temple, Naniwa Palace, and Osaka Castle, placing Osaka’s history into a broader perspective. It’s a calm and thoughtful way to end the tour.

We had a lovely afternoon walking through Nakazakicho and Tenma with Yuji. He is an incredibly friendly, pleasant, and enthusiastic guide who clearly enjoys sharing Osaka with visitors. He navigated the areas perfectly, showed us charming hidden spots, and answered all our questions helpfully and clearly.

Tour of Osaka-jo Castle
(Highlights) The present castle building looks beautiful, powerful and in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. However, it was the venue of hegemony, bloody conflicts and natural disasters for many centuries. Once you visit the castle, you will be amazed at the magnificent structures, huge moats and the beautiful natural environment. The view from the top of the eight-storied donjon is splendid. You can reach there either by going up the steep stairways or taking an elevator ride. The castle is in the heart and the landmark of Osaka city, where many modern buildings stand. (How to enjoy) You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the one-kilometer road leading to the castle after you get off the train and, once inside the precincts, you cannot spare even a moment without marveling at the sight of an ancient technology and human wisdom, as well as the huge rocks building up the protection walls. Not only seeing the buildings, you can also sit on the grass and enjoy having lunch with your family members or friends. (Others) The entrance fee is 600 yen per person and the JR Osaka Loop Line train fare is 300 yen for the ride from Osaka to Osaka-jo-koen station. The fare for the ride between Kyoto and Osaka, meanwhile, is 510 yen.
