Osaka: Hidden Gems
You have seen and loved Osaka and you want more? You prefer going off the beaten track? Then this is the tour for you. It offers a gorgeous but seldom visited temple, a historical streetcar, a shopping street where the locals come, an immersion in Japan's Edo period, architectural landmarks of the Meiji period, and all that in just one day.

Meeting Point
Your hotel
- I'm happy to pick you up at your hotel.
Sumiyoshi Taisha
This 1800 year old Shinto shrine is the head of the 2300 shrines of Sumiyoshi shintoïsm. It features four main sanctuaries and a gorgeous bridge.
The Hankai streetcar
We'll go to our next destination riding on the last remaining streetcar in Osaka, with a 120 year old history going back to the Meiji emperors. Some of the cars even predate the second World War. The ride gives you a view of everyday southern Osaka at street level that the Metro completely hides.
Lunch at Tsuruhashi Shopping Street
Discover Osaka's most important foreign community... and start with their food. Korean chijimi (pancakes), kimchi (preserved vegetables), grilled meat, mandu (dumplings), Korean sweets... Enough variety to cater to every taste!
Ikuno Korea Town
We take a stroll through one of the largest Korean communities in Japan, a labyrinth of colourful winding streets with shops where you can buy anything Korean - but also electronics, or clothes at a small price.
Osaka Museum of Housing and Living
Well, not really a museum. On the fourth floor of this very contemporary building, a complete street from the time of the Edo empire has been reconstructed. Whether you want to take a romantic picture (and yes, you can hire a kimono! :-) ) or you want to see how ancient Japan lived its life, this place is very much worth it!
Important notice: this museum is scheduled to close for renovations. If that's the case during your tour, I propose as an alternative a visit to the magnificent Fujita Art Museum, housing the collection of Fujita Denzaburō (1841–1912), one of the great Osaka industrialists and collectors of the Meiji period. Its approximately 2,000 works include nine official National Treasures, with paintings, Buddhist art, calligraphy, ceramics...
A stroll through Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street
With its 2,5 kilometers, this is one of the world's largest covered shopping streets - and it's one where all Osaka comes to shop for anything you can imagine.
Ōsaka Tenman-gū
This 1100 year old shrine is dedicated to Michizane, a courtier who after his death came to be venerated as the god-spirit of scholarship and the arts. The shrine belongs organically to Tenjinbashi-suji: the shopping street originally developed as the temple town.
A walk through Meiji history
We finish the day with a varied walk through Nakanoshima Park with its rose garden, alongside the riverfront, to pass a number of buildings of the period of the Meiji emperor who brought Western architecture to Japan. The Meiji era was a time of astonishingly fast Europeanisation that changed Japan's identity forever.
Ending Point
We end the tour near the Tosabori River, where you have a number of attractive options for dinner. Or if you prefer, I take you back to your hotel.
