Meeting Point
at the cruise terminal
- Other options: Aomori station or your hotel
Coffee Break
We begin with a relaxed coffee break before starting the tour.
Over coffee, I will introduce the theme of the day: what has supported the hearts of Japanese people and the people of Aomori. You will learn the basic difference between Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, and how food and festivals are deeply connected to local identity in Aomori.
Seiryuji Temple: The Big Buddha
Visit Seiryuji Temple, located in the peaceful countryside outside Aomori City.
Here, you will see the Showa Daibutsu, “Big Buddha”. It is the tallest bronze seated Buddha statue in Japan, standing 21 meters high. The temple grounds also include a beautiful five-storied pagoda, a dry landscape Zen garden, and wide views of rice fields and nature.
Through this visit, we will explore how Buddhism has shaped the Japanese view of life, death, silence, and prayer. The temple was built with the belief that temple buildings themselves can quietly teach people, even without words.
Uto Shrine
Visit Uto Shrine, one of the most important shrines in Aomori City and known as the spiritual guardian of the area.
This shrine has long been cherished as a place where people pray for safety, family happiness, business success, and guidance in life.
Here, we will explore how Shinto is connected to celebration, gratitude, nature, and everyday prayer. While the temple shows the Buddhist view of life and death, the shrine shows how Japanese people seek blessings, protection, and guidance in daily life.
Lunch: The Fish Bowl You Design at Fish Market
Enjoy a fun and local lunch experience at Aomori Gyosai Center, where you can design your own seafood bowl. You will walk through the market, choose your favorite fresh sashimi and toppings, and create a fish bowl made just for you. It is a delicious way to experience Aomori’s seafood culture in a casual and interactive style.
If you do not like raw fish or seafood, we can also visit a ramen shop or another local restaurant instead.
WA RASSE: Nebuta Museum
Visit WA RASSE, a museum dedicated to the Nebuta Festival, one of Aomori’s most powerful cultural traditions.
Nebuta is not only a summer festival. It is a folk tradition, a community ritual, and a source of pride for the people of Aomori. Through the giant illuminated floats, music, and festival atmosphere, you will feel how Nebuta has supported the energy, identity, and spirit of the local people.
After exploring temples and shrines as spiritual foundations of Japan, this visit shows another kind of spiritual anchor: the festival that brings Aomori people together.
Shopping Spot: A-FACTORY
End the tour at A-FACTORY, a stylish local market near Aomori Station.
Here, you can explore Aomori’s famous apple products, cider, sweets, juice, and local souvenirs. After learning about temples, shrines, food, and Nebuta, this final stop gives you time to relax, shop, and take a piece of Aomori’s culture home with you.

About Tour Guide Hiro K.
Hi, I’m Hiro.
With me, you can experience travel that goes beyond sightseeing and connects you with local culture and everyday life in Japan. You might cook with local grandmothers, walk through rice fields with farmers, taste seasonal ingredients, visit a neighborhood grocery store, stop by a small coffee shop, or go bar hopping with locals. These are ways to enjoy the slower rhythm of life in Aomori.
My great-grandmother was from Hakodate, Hokkaido. I have visited many times since childhood, so I can guide you there too and help you explore Aomori and Hakodate in one journey.
I was born and raised in Aomori and have close connections with local farmers, families, and community members. Before returning home, I spent eight years in Tokyo serving in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, where I helped welcome VIP guests, including state guests and world leaders. Having lived in both Tokyo and rural Japan, I can help you experience both sides of the country.
I’m a licensed guide and a licensed nature guide, as well as a Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor. I also hold Medic First Aid certification. If you enjoy being outdoors, I would be happy to guide you along the Michinoku Coastal Trail or introduce you to other nature experiences.
Feel free to contact me anytime. I would be happy to welcome you to Japan.

“Splendid tour on a Beautiful Day”
we left Aomori with a guide, Hiro K, we have travelled with before and had a magnificent day. first stop was the Takayama Inari shrine which was so impressive with its torii gates, water features, main hall, fox statues, scenic landscape, and lack of people in such a serene setting. Hiro is very informative and enthusiastic and we enjoyed learning about this shrine. next stop was an apple orchard and vineyard and we learned about the growing processes, varieties grown, etc. was excellent to see how some aspects of agriculture work in Japan. amazing home cooked lunch. if you're gluten free he thinkss outside the box to ensure you stay healthy. then off to see Japan's longest wooden bridge - lagoon with various birds, storks being in attendance. enjoyed seeing the agricultural land around Aomori with such a knowledgeable guide. he helped us find two shops in Aomori at the very end of our tour - one with maps and one with lacquerware. I would highly recommend this guide and would certainly use his services if/when I return - probably next year. deb

Thank you very much for your warm and thoughtful review. It was a pleasure to spend another wonderful day with you. Exploring the peaceful grounds of Takayama Inari Shrine and walking across the wooden bridge were lovely experiences. I especially enjoyed our conversations in the car, it was such a pleasure to talk and laugh together about so many things. Another memorable moment was seeing Chris’s eyes widen as he said “Wow!” while looking through the book about Japanese flowers and plants. His enthusiasm made me smile. Seeing you enjoy these experiences brings me great joy. I look forward to seeing you again in Hokkaido next year! Enjoy the rest of your journey and travel safely.

“Aomori Beyond the Tourist Stops”
We had such a great day with Hiro! He put together a custom itinerary for us that included a Tsugaru lacquerware experience at Neputa Village in Hirosaki, a stop at Niji-no-Mart, Tsuyu Yakisoba in Kuroishi, and a sake tasting at Narumi Sake Brewery. We ended up having some extra time, so Hiro took us to an additional museum that wasn’t even on the original itinerary, which was a really nice bonus. Hiro is super laid-back and just goes with the flow, which is exactly what we like. He’s really knowledgeable and showed us places and introduced us to foods that we probably never would have found or tried on our own. It felt much more like exploring Aomori with a friend than being on a typical guided tour. We had a really fun day and got to see and experience a side of Aomori we definitely wouldn’t have found by ourselves. We’d absolutely recommend Hiro!

Thank you so much for your lovely review! I loved how you embraced the day as if you were locals enjoying an ordinary weekend in Aomori. I had such a wonderful time with you, and it was a pleasure hearing about your hometown, your work, and your lives. From making Tsugaru lacquerware spoons to trying local favorites like Natto-hanpen-fried tofu, Sujiko, and Kirikomi, not to mention Tsuyu yakisoba in Kuroishi, we shared so many little tastes of everyday life here. Exploring Niji-no-Mart, our local kitchen, and the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art together was another highlight. Our conversations were just as memorable. Your thoughtful observations and curiosity made the day especially enjoyable for me. I hope you’ll enjoy a comforting bowl of soup with your new Tsugaru lacquerware bowls and the spoons we made together. Please give me a little more time to send the spoons! And your stories inspired me, too. I look forward to deepening my relationship with my partner over the next ten years. Please come and see us again whenever you’re back in Aomori. Thank you again for such a wonderful day! Hiro

“The Past and Present in a 6 hour Tour”
The three of us were impressed with Hiro's knowledge at the Sannai-Maruyama site and enjoyed the morning that we spent there. The tour could be as long or short as we wanted, as Hiro is quite flexible, but we were pleased to take in as much as we could. Lunch followed at an excellent downtown restaurant and since two of us have dietary requirements, Hiro was aware and ensured that we both remained healthy. The cultural present was represented by the Wa Rasse museum which highlights the Nebuta Festival. The floats that we saw were incredibly beautiful, colourful and spirited - impressive works of art. Enjoyed an enthusiastic, joyful and informative tour - in fact we thought so highly of him we are going to have him guide us on another tour when the ship returns in October. Deb B.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. The three of you were so intellectually curious that I truly enjoyed our time together as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and perspectives with me about how buildings were constructed, local plants, and the connections between different cultures and regions around the world. It was a real pleasure and an honor to learn from you and discuss these topics together. I also took you to a place that I don’t usually include on my tours, and I was delighted that it ended up being one of the places you enjoyed the most! I’m glad you enjoyed our lunch and that we could accommodate everyone’s dietary needs. At the Nebuta Museum WA RASSE, it also made me very happy to see you looking beyond the beautiful floats and taking an interest in the history and culture behind the festival. We even had time to share stories about our families, which made those six hours together even more enjoyable and memorable for me. Thank you again, and I’m already looking forward to our next adventure together in October. I have more in store for you! Hiro
