Edible Culture is a private rural Aomori experience where you see, hear, touch, feel, and finally taste our local culture. Visit a local market or a farmer friend’s production site, then step into my grandmother’s home for a hands-on cooking class and homemade lunch. This is not a sightseeing tour — it is an invitation to experience Aomori through daily life, local people, and food.

Itinerary

This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!

09:00 AM

Meeting Point

at the cruise terminal

- Other options: Aomori station or your hotel

10:00 AM

local market or my farmer friend’s production site

Local market:

At a local market where regional ingredients naturally gather, you will discover the everyday food culture of rural Aomori. This is not a tourist market — it is a place used by local residents in their daily lives. Walk through the stalls, see what people here really eat, and try small tastings along the way. Some flavors may be unfamiliar to you. Some may surprise you. And some, you may fall in love with.

My farmer friend’s production site:

Visit the fields and production sites of my farmer friends, depending on the season and availability. You may see rice fields, apple orchards, grape farms, Shine Muscat vineyards, leek fields, or other seasonal crops. As you listen to the farmers’ stories, you will begin to understand the local geography — the wind, water, soil, snow, and seasons that shape the food of this region. Stand in the fields, feel the breeze, and experience how the land itself becomes part of Aomori’s culture.

11:00 AM

Cooking Class at My Grandmother’s Home

At the entrance, an ikebana flower arrangement is prepared just for you, marking the beginning of a warm and personal experience.

In this hands-on cooking class, you will cook together with local grandmothers who have spent their lives preparing seasonal dishes with local ingredients. They will share home-style recipes, family stories, and the wisdom passed down through generations.

Then, roll up your sleeves and prepare comforting local dishes such as seasonal vegetable miso soup, onigiri, and small side dishes. You will learn simple Japanese cooking techniques, including how to wash, cut, season, and shape ingredients in a way you can easily try again at home.

The meal will be served on traditional local tableware made by local artisans, allowing you to experience not only the taste of Aomori, but also its craftsmanship and sense of beauty.

Once the food is ready, we will gather around one table and share the meal together. Vegan and vegetarian options are available upon request, so everyone can enjoy the same dishes. Enjoy the flavors, stories, and laughter that connect people across cultures.

About Tour Guide Hiro K.

Hi, I’m Hiro.

With me, you can experience immersive travel that goes beyond sightseeing and connects you with local culture and everyday life in Japan. For example, you may cook with local grandmothers, walk through rice fields and farms with local farmers, taste seasonal ingredients, visit local grocery stores, stop by small coffee shops, enjoy bar hopping with locals, and experience the slower rhythm of everyday life in small-town Aomori.

I can also guide you in Hakodate, Hokkaido, just across the Tsugaru Strait, and help you combine Aomori and Hakodate into one seamless journey.

I was born and raised in Aomori, which is why I have strong connections with local farmers, families, and community members. Before returning home, I spent 8 years in Tokyo serving in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, where I was involved in welcoming VIP guests including state guests and world leaders. Because I have experienced both Tokyo and rural Japan deeply, I strongly appreciate the warmth of local communities and the richness of life lived alongside the seasons. So if you want to experience both modern Tokyo and the authentic countryside of Japan in one journey, I may be the right guide for you.

Feel free to contact me anytime. I would be happy to welcome you to Japan.

Wonderful Local Guide

Hiro was a wonderful guide. He is a local who knows his way around the area and speaks both Japanese and English. We did not select one of Hiro’s pre-packaged tours; rather, due to our time constraints and interests, Hiro provided a custom itinerary based on our schedule and places of interest. We mainly needed someone to serve as an intermediary for the places we wanted to see since we were unfamiliar with the area, do not speak Japanese, and had limited time. Hiro arrived on time and kept us informed of his location and arrival time. At each destination, Hiro was flexible in allowing us to take our time to explore but made sure we arrived at our next destination on time. When our selected lunch location was too busy, he recommended a local shop that served delicious ramen. Overall, Hiro was positive and friendly, knowledgeable about the areas we visited, thoughtful toward our interests and needs, easy to communicate with, and provided an affordable rate.

Thank you so much, Kyle san, for your wonderful review. Spending time with your family made me think, “This is what a truly happy family looks like.” I was especially impressed by everyone’s intellectual curiosity. At the Sannai-Maruyama Site, I was delighted to show you places that I do not usually include in my tours, and your family explored everything with genuine interest and enthusiasm. I was also amazed to see your grandfather, who is over 80 years old, jumping energetically as a Haneto dancer at the Nebuta Museum! Having such a healthy body and joyful spirit at his age is truly inspiring. Ending our time together with ramen and delicious coffee was also wonderful. I hope you were able to find and buy the watch you were looking for. I also hope that the two of you who went to see the Nebuta festival that evening had a wonderful and unforgettable experience. I had a wonderful time guiding your family. I hope your family’s future cruise adventures continue to bring you many joyful and unforgettable memories. When my partner and I visit the United States, I would love to get in touch with you! Hiro
