Sasaguri Shikoku was established during the Tenpo era (1830-34) of the Edo
Period. But in 1886, Fukuoka prefectural office ordered them to break the sacred place under the influence of the anti-Buddhism policy. But local people had petitioned the Government for its continued existence for about 10 years. As a result, the Government permitted them to retain it on condition of moving Nanzoin here from Mt. koyasan.
The purport of building the reclining Buddha
Nanzoin has sent medical supplies to the children of Myanmar and Nepal for
many years. In 1988, the Buddhist congress of Myanmar presented us with
sacred ashes of Gautama Buddha, Ananda and Maudgalyayana as a return for their presents.
Nanzoin believes that these presents are thanks to the eminent virtues of many people. Therefore, they planned out to build the statue to worship these sacred ashes. They wish this would be a reliable statue for everybody.

About Tour Guide Tadashi M.
Hello! My name is Tadashi. I was born and raised in Fukuoka and I've lived here all my life. I used to work for a local bank where I was mainly involved in export, import, and foreign exchange, etc. Afterwards I joined a university where I taught international economics and foreign trade for five years.
I'm happy to arrange your tour plans according to your requests and help you to write your own unique story with me.
If you're coming to Fukuoka for the first time, I recommend Tochoji Temple, Kushida Shrine and Fukuoka Castle Ruins where you can get feel for Japanese culture and history. Thirty minutes away from the center by train is Dazaifu. There you can enjoy a very famous shrine, Dazaifu Tenmangu, known as the home of " the god of literature or calligraphy." and Kyushu National Museum. Fukuoka is also a mecca for shopping and food.
If you're coming to Fukuoka again, I recommend that you try local food, for example, Hakata Ramen-noodles in pork broth and locally caught fish. I can also take you to a traditional Japanese shopping arcade,
Kawabata Shotengai. If you would like to get out of the city, we could go to Yanagawa, a town of canals, which is a one hour ride from the city center. You can try boat tours enjoying the leisurely view of the historic buildings and try Steamed Eel.
Fukuoka travel tip: if you arrive in Fukuoka by JR, make sure to get off at "Hakata Station." Sorry, there's no "Fukuoka Station." on JR lines. Hakata is an old name for Fukuoka and your destination.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

“Day trip to Kintaikyo Bridge and village”
We had a full on day but we'll worth it to see the famous Kintaikyo bridge structure. Tadashi met us at our hotel in Fukuoka and gave us a pack with brochures of the Fukuoka and photocopies of the research he had done on the bridge. A very nice thoughtful gesture. John had fallen while getting on an escalator and after that Tadashi was exceptional in making sure John was safely on and off them. The Kintaikyo park area was peaceful, full of water features and the view from the ropeway and castle was amazing. Lunch was yummy and the ice cream soda at the end of the visit cooled us down. Thank you, Tadashi, for a very nice informative day and the sweet treats you provided.

Hi Shirley and John-san Thank you for your wonderful comment. I'm really glad you both enjoyed the trip. How is my elder-brother's leg? Did it get any worse the next day? Anyway, I also had a good time with both of you. Thank you. Please come to Japan again in spring (sakura) or in November ( tinted autumn leaves ). Tadashi

“Fukuoka - Open Bus Tour”
Over many, many years we have travelled extensively throughout America, Europe and now Asia Pacific travelling through Japan for about 2 weeks. Across these years of touring with guides, Tadashi M. Has been the best guide we have had. He was very flexible with the itinerary and extraordinarily generous with his time, taking us to places where tourists would not ordinarily go and be able to see the real Japan. He is highly recommended.

Hi Angelo-san Thank you for your comment. I am really happy to receive such words as a guide. I also had a good time with your group. Fukuoka is a great place to live and has delicious food, so we currently have customers fom all over Japan and the world. This time, we didn't have time to take you to the eel restaurant. Next time, I'll take you to a restaurant that serves delicious eel (Unagi) Be sure to visit Fukuoka again. Tadashi

Tadashi is a patient, knowledgeable and thorough guide. The Shinto shrine and Buddha temple are definitely worth visiting, it gives a sense of Japanese past history in Fukuoka. Shopping is a definite plus in Fukuoka.
