Kotohira Pilgrimage & Cultural Heritage Tour
Explore the cultural highlights of Kagawa in a single day.
We begin with a relaxed walk to Kotohira Shrine (Konpira-san), enjoying its sacred atmosphere and scenic views, followed by a visit to Kanamaruza, Japan’s oldest kabuki theater.
Afterward, we head to Shikoku Mura museum, where traditional houses and historic buildings offer a vivid look into Shikoku’s rural past.
If you prefer, we can visit Ritsurin Garden instead of Shikoku mura, which shortens the train travel time.
Itinerary

Meeting Point
Takamatsu Chikko Station ( Kotoden train ) or JR Takamatsu station
Kotoden Train ride
We can take either JR or local Kotoden train for about 60 minuntes to Kotohira Station.
Kotohira Shrine and Kanamaruza Kabuki theater
From Kotoden Kotohira Station, we stroll along the lively san̄dō, lined with traditional sweet shops, udon restaurants, and local crafts. After passing through the grand mountain gate, we enter the sacred place. Here you can explore the Omote-Shoin and Oku-Shoin, former residences of high priests, known for their elegant rooms and beautiful wall paintings. The Treasure Hall at Kotohira Shrine displays a rich collection of sacred artifacts, artworks, and historical items dedicated over centuries by pilgrims and worshippers. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of Konpira-san.
Kotohira Shrine has 786 stone steps, but I will adjust the route to your pace. Even without climbing the steepest part, you can still enjoy the sacred atmosphere that has welcomed pilgrims for over a thousand years. A taxi can also take us up to Kamitsubaki Parlor, a historic resting place where pilgrims once stopped for tea. From the parlor, the taxi can continue to Kanamaruza, Japan’s oldest surviving kabuki theater, where you can step inside and see how the stage is still crafted and prepared for spring performances.
Konpira Udon noodle lunch
For lunch, we enjoy authentic local food that pilgrims likely savored before or after their long journey—a traditional udon noodle restaurant offering a quick and delicious meal.
After lunch, we can visit the Kinryo Sake shop and museum, where sake is still brewed and dedicated to the deities of Kotohiragu Shrine.
Train ride to Shikokumura Museum
We take the Kotoden train, a relaxing and scenic ride that gives us time to chat and enjoy the local atmosphere. We transfer at Kawaramachi Station and get off at Kotoden Yashima Station. The entire journey to Shikoku Mura Museum takes about 1 hour and 33 minutes.
Shikokumura Museum
Shikoku Mura Museum is an open-air museum nestled on the slopes of Mt. Yashima, where traditional buildings from across Shikoku have been carefully relocated and preserved. We visit highlights such as the sugar cane processing hut, old paper-making farmers’ houses, and the small waterfall that give a vivid sense of how people once lived and worked in the countryside. Please note that, as the open-air museum was beautifully designed by the stone sculptor Nagare, the path includes a stone-paved hill. We can adjust how far we walk, or enjoy the video theater partly— we can decide on the spot.
Our visit ends with a relaxing tea break at the former residence of an English merchant in Kobe built in 1905, a charming Western-style house that offers a peaceful place to rest before continuing the tour. If you start to feel tired, we can also take a taxi back to your hotel for a comfortable and easy return.
(Plan B) Ritsurin Garden
Immerse yourself in one of Japan’s finest traditional gardens, awarded three stars by the Michelin Guide. Stroll through beautifully landscaped paths or glide across the calm waters on a traditional boat, discovering breathtaking views at every turn.
During the visit, your guide will share the fascinating history behind Ritsurin Garden—literally “Chestnut Grove Garden”, despite there being only a handful of chestnut trees remaining today. You’ll hear stories of how the feudal lords of the Takamatsu domain designed and enjoyed this garden during the samurai era, using it as a place of leisure, cultural refinement, and hospitality for important guests.
Pause at an elegant teahouse to savor matcha and delicate sweets, embracing a moment of tranquility in this timeless setting while learning the deeper meanings behind its design.
Ending Point
Takamatsu Chikko station or wherever you wish to end

About Tour Guide Mika S.
My name is Mika, a local guide living in Takamatsu city. I have been an English teacher, but the Setouchi International Art Festival awakened me to the joy of guiding. The more I learn about the Seto Inland Sea region, the more I am impressed by its life, history, architecture and art works. So, I would like to show you the spectacular scenery that you may have missed in guidebooks alone, and the sights that have yet to be introduced in guidebooks.
In Kagawa Prefecture, island tours are also very popular, such as Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima, which are sacred places for contemporary art, and I think you can better understand the connection between the history of the islands and art by touring with a guide.
Of course, I would also like to introduce fresh harvest from the Seto Inland Sea, delicious local food, and shopping for folk crafts in the Takamatsu shopping arcade, which will satisfy you fully as a highlight of your journey.

“A Perfect Day”
My tour with Mika on Naoshima was an absolute highlight of my two-week trip to Japan. She is incredibly knowledgeable about this unique art island, as well as the artists and architects behind its remarkable museums and galleries. From the planning phase through the day of the tour, Mika was wonderfully accommodating and helpful. Her clear instructions made it easy for me to explore Naoshima on my own the next day and even visit a few highlights in Takamatsu, where I was staying. Mika’s insight, organization, and enthusiasm made the experience unforgettable. Thank you, Mika!

Reading your message truly made my day! Thank you for letting me share Naoshima’s art and architecture with you. Even though it was the busiest time of the year during the Triennale, we were able to appreciate the island thoroughly thanks to your enthusiasm for contemporary art. Wishing you many more inspiring journeys, and I hope you’ll visit Japan again someday! Mika

“Shodoshima Day Tour”
I was searching for things to see in Kagawa and had seen a few videos on Shodoshima, so knew I definitely wanted to visit. When I saw Mika san’s Shodoshima tour page I knew that it was the tour for me ! We quickly came to agreement on a list of places to visit, and then Mika san came back with a detailed itinerary taking into account what time of day the sandbar at Angel Road would be walkable due to the tides. I was more than happy to accept this itinerary as it covered more places than I thought we’d be able to see in one day ! On the day of the tour we met at the ferry terminal in Takamatsu, bought tickets and then took the ferry to Shodoshima. Due to Mika san’s planning we were right on time to catch a local bus to tour the Olive Garden and see the famous “windmill”. From there we then took a small boat over to the “24 eyes movie studio” which I’d asked to be included on the tour and where we had an excellent lunch. I’m so glad I took Mika san’s lunch recommendation of Hishio pork ! We then toured the studio before moving to an old closed school (which was also used as a movie location). The guide at the school was a pupil at the school when it closed, so thanks to Mika san for translating for us both. We then visited two soy sauce breweries - each with their own very distinct character ! From there we went to the famous Nakayama Terraced rice fields, before proceeding to Tomioka Hachiman shrine which has a great view overlooking Angel Road. After that we went to Angel Road itself which was just an amazing experience ! Finally, before heading to the port for our return, we quickly toured Maze Town in Tonosho and visited Ko Shrine. Regrettably it was then time to board the ferry for the return journey, although as this was a Sunday there was a local Shodoshima traditional dance/music group to see us off ! An absolutely fantastic day, which I’d be more than happy to repeat so I’d definitely recommend this tour to others ! Thank you again Mika san !!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! You were not only the first guest who already knew the story of Twenty-Four Eyes, but also someone who had visited the movie director’s hometown, Hamamatsu City — I was truly impressed. I deeply admired your thoughtful travel choices throughout Japan and felt honored to accompany you on the special island of Shodoshima. I hope you’ll return one day to continue exploring the other two unique prefectures of Shikoku! Mika
