The legacy of Kamikaze pilots in Kanoya Air Base Museum & Sakurajima Volcano
Over 1,000 Navy kamikaze pilots launched missions from Kanoya Naval Air Base towards the end of World War II. This tour visits the site of that tragedy and the Kanoya Air Base Museum. At the Kanoya Tourism and Products Center, located next to the museum, visitors can enjoy a revival of the traditional "Kanoya Navy Curry," which is served every Friday. Then, visit Sakurajima that has erupted massively 17 times to experience its living presence and the way the local community coexists with it.

Kanoya Air Base Museum
There were three bases within a 10km radius of Kanoya City, two of which were used as kamikaze bases, functioning as bases for southern Kyushu and being the most important bases for kamikaze operations. The highest number of casualties were from Kanoya Air Base and Kushira Air Base in Kanoya City, with 1,271 young and precious lives lost in the seas of Okinawa.

Buried Shrine Gate, Kurokami
The roughly 3-meter (10-foot) torii gate of Kurokami Shrine was buried, with only its top beam still visible. Rather than excavate the gate, the village elder chose to leave it buried as a testament to the eruption's menace for future generations. Standing quietly next to the gate, as if nestling against it, is an old Japanese sea fig tree that miraculously survived the eruption.
Arimura Observatory
This observation point is located on a small hill in the lava field that flowed out in the great explosion of 1946. It is located in the middle of the 1km-long lava promenade, and offers a view of the imposing, world-famous active volcano, Sakurajima, and Kinko Bay as if they were right in front of you. Sakurajima viewed from here has a different appearance than other points. With its steep triangular shape and the nearby crater of Minami-dake, which is currently active, on some days you can hear the rumbling sounds and explosions associated with eruptions, allowing you to experience a different side of Sakurajima.
Sakurajima Visitor center
Watch 15 minutes Movie about the real volcanic acitivies on English subtitle, some pannels to explain the past explosive eruptions, vegetations after eruptions and the real life with the active volcano.
Footbath at Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park
One of the largest footbaths in Japan with a length of 100 meters. It uses natural hot springs with a source temperature of 42 degrees that gush out from 1,000 meters underground. When you soak in the reddish-brown footbath, your body will be warmed up and relaxed. Take a break while looking out at Kagoshima Bay spreading out in front of you or Sakurajima towering behind you.
Take a ferry back to the city side

“Fantastic and Amazing Experience!! ”
We had an absolutely wonderful day with Hitomi visiting the wonderful island to see and experience Sakurajima. From the initial communication to setting up the trip including specific dietary requirements and timings, everything was done promptly and with ease. On the day, as agreed everything from the pickup at our hotel to the whole day's schedule ran perfectly. It was meticulously planned and followed and yet it never felt like we were following a script. Hitomi is the consummate professional who speaks perfect English and her knowledge of the area and volcano is second to none. Highly recommended and we hope that we will be able to visit again soon!! Thank you so much for posting such a wonderful review; I was truly impressed by your writing. I am delighted that you and your lovely family enjoyed your visit to Sakurajima, an active volcano. I appreciate you traveling all the way to Kagoshima—navigating the Shinkansen system, with its sometimes-cumbersome ticketing process, to tour Japan. Please do come back to visit Kyushu again with your delightful wife and children. Arigato Jeegar-san

“Volcano, Vinegar and Samurai fun”
Our group had a wonderful time on the tour with Hitomi. Even before the tour day, Hitomi was in contact with clarifications and requesting lunch orders. She and the driver greeted us at the port at the agreed time, actually a few minutes early. She was extremely organized and based on the weather and crowds, made some minor adjustments to the agenda. The volcano visit was wonderful despite a little rain. The foot bath was soothing and none of us wanted to leave. The visit to the amber rice vinegar brewery was great and we learned lots with Hitomi acting as the English interpreter, lunch was ready and waiting for us and very yummy. Next was the visit samurai villa which was very different from the temples and castles we had visited on previous tours, a great learning experience again and the grounds were beautiful. Thank you Hitomi for showing us some wonderful sites in your home city and country side.

Thank you for your wonderful review. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed Kagoshima even in the rain. I remember you enjoying the footbath in the cold, asking enthusiastic questions about amber vinegar, and having amber Vinegar lunch with you. Thank you for visiting Kagoshima, Japan. Wishing you all the best!

“Beautiful day in Kagoshima ”
We enjoyed an excellent day in Kagoshima with Hitomi as our guide. She had arranged everything perfectly for our cruise port visit and was a great host. Hitomi even made us a reservation for a hot pot meal to try the famous Kagoshima black pork and it was so delicious- "Meccha oishii"! Thank you Hitomi for a great introduction to your city!
