Zuisenji Temple is a peaceful Zen temple tucked away in the eastern hills of Kamakura, far from the busy streets and famous tourist sites. Founded in 1327 by the influential Zen priest Muso Kokushi, the temple became closely associated with the powerful Ashikaga family during the Muromachi period. Muso was also renowned as a garden designer, and Zuisenji is famous for its remarkable rock garden, carved directly into the natural cliff behind the main hall. Unlike traditional dry gardens covered with gravel, this garden uses the mountain itself as its backdrop, creating a dramatic and deeply contemplative atmosphere.

The approach to the temple is equally beautiful, especially in autumn and winter, when the surrounding mountains become quiet and serene. Moss-covered stone steps, old trees and seasonal flowers create a sense of entering another world.

Zuisenji is also known for its connection with literature and culture. Several poets and writers visited or stayed in the area, inspired by its secluded setting. Today, Zuisenji offers visitors a chance to experience the quieter, more spiritual side of Kamakura—where Zen, nature, history and Japanese aesthetics come together.

From there, begin your trek, aiming for the summit of Mt. Ohira—the highest peak in Kamakura—where you can enjoy distant views of Yokohama and Tokyo. Continue along the trail toward Kencho-ji Temple.

Along the way, encounter traces of various eras, including roadside Jizo statues, kiridoshi (mountain passes carved by samurai during the Kamakura period), and air-raid shelters from World War II. The path also winds through deep forest terrain reminiscent of the worlds found in Studio Ghibli films like Princess Mononoke or My Neighbor Totoro.

In the latter half of the trek, reach an observation point offering views of the Kamakura coast and Mount Fuji. The final destination of the trek is Hanzo-bo, located on the upper grounds of Kenchoji. Here, immerse yourself in a world of legend while visiting the shrine dedicated to the Karasu-tengu (crow-billed tengu).

Kenchoji Temple, founded in 1253 by Hojo Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura Shogunate, is one of the most important Zen temples in Japan. It is regarded as Japan’s oldest Zen training monastery and ranks first among Kamakura’s Five Great Zen Temples. The temple belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and has played a major role in the development of Japanese Zen culture.

Entering through the impressive Sanmon Gate, visitors can explore a series of historic buildings, including the Buddha Hall and the Hatto, traditionally used for Zen teachings. Behind the main hall lies a beautiful Japanese garden, designed to create a peaceful atmosphere for meditation and contemplation.

From the higher grounds, visitors can enjoy spectacular views across Kamakura toward the sea. Kenchoji is therefore more than a historic temple—it is a place where Zen, nature, history and Japanese legend come together.
