Yamate Italian Garden
Italian Garden, also known as Yamate Italian Garden, is one of Yokohama’s hidden gems. This beautiful garden combines elegant Italian-style landscaping with the historic atmosphere of the former foreign settlement area. As we walk through the terraced gardens, you can enjoy colorful seasonal flowers, fountains, and carefully designed pathways that create a peaceful and relaxing environment.
The garden is also home to two historic Western-style buildings, the former residence of an Australian trader and the former residence of a Japanese diplomat. These buildings reflect the international character of Yokohama, one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in the 19th century.
From several points in the garden, visitors can enjoy lovely views of the city and imagine what this hillside looked like when foreign merchants and diplomats lived here more than a century ago. Today, the Italian Garden offers a perfect blend of European elegance and Japanese hospitality. It is a wonderful place to slow down, appreciate the beauty of nature, and discover an important chapter in Yokohama’s international history.
Motomachi Park
Motomachi Park is a peaceful green space located in the heart of Yokohama’s historic Yamate district. More than just a park, this area marks an important chapter in the city’s international history. As we stroll through the park, we can enjoy beautiful trees, quiet pathways, and a relaxing atmosphere away from the busy city.
The surrounding neighborhood is also known for its impressive churches, reflecting the multicultural community that developed here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Along our walk, we will see elegant Christian churches, including Yamate Catholic Church and other historic places of worship built by foreign residents and missionaries. Their distinctive architecture and peaceful surroundings add a European charm to the area.
Walking through Motomachi Park and its neighboring church district offers a unique opportunity to experience how different cultures came together to shape modern Yokohama.
From here, we will continue our walk toward Harbor View Park, where spectacular views of Yokohama Port await us.
Harbor View Park
Harbor View Park is one of Yokohama’s most scenic locations, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Yokohama Port, the Bay Bridge, and the surrounding waterfront. Situated on a hill overlooking the harbor, the park was once part of the foreign settlement area and remains closely connected to the city’s international history.
As we walk through the park, we can enjoy beautifully maintained rose gardens, seasonal flowers, and peaceful walking paths. The elevated viewpoint allows us to appreciate why this area was favored by foreign residents who settled in Yokohama after the port opened to international trade in 1859. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sea, the modern skyline, and the greenery of the park creates a truly memorable landscape.
Harbor View Park is not only a place of natural beauty but also a symbol of Yokohama’s connection with the world. From here, we can look out across the harbor and imagine the ships that brought people, goods, and new ideas to Japan, helping shape the cosmopolitan city we see today.
Ending Point
Yamashita Park
