Meeting Point
Osanbashi Yokohama port (International passenger terminal)

The Great Buddha
Your journey begins with a comfortable taxi ride from Yokohama Port to Kamakura, a scenic drive of approximately 1-1.5 hours. Along the way, I will introduce the history of Kamakura, Japan's first samurai capital, and explain how it flourished as the political center of the country in the late 12th century.
Your first destination is the iconic Great Buddha (Daibutsu) of Kamakura, one of Japan's most famous landmarks. Standing over 11 meters (about 37 feet) tall and cast in bronze more than 750 years ago, the statue represents Amida Buddha, a symbol of peace, compassion, and wisdom. Originally housed inside a large temple hall, the Great Buddha has stood in the open air since the 15th century after powerful typhoons and tidal waves destroyed the surrounding buildings. Today, visitors from around the world come to admire its serene expression and timeless beauty. You will have time to walk around the statue, take memorable photos, and, if you wish, step inside the Buddha to learn about its remarkable construction before continuing to the next destination.
Hasedera temple
After visiting the Great Buddha, enjoy a pleasant walk of about 10 minutes to Hase Temple, one of Kamakura's most beautiful and beloved temples. Founded in the 8th century, the temple is famous for its magnificent wooden statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, which stands over nine meters (30 feet) tall and is one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan.
As you explore the temple grounds, you'll discover beautifully landscaped gardens, peaceful ponds, and seasonal flowers that change throughout the year, making every visit unique. From the temple's observation terrace, take in breathtaking panoramic views of Kamakura, the surrounding hills, and the sparkling waters of Sagami Bay. Hase Temple also features charming pathways, small shrines, and hundreds of Jizo statues, lovingly dedicated to children and unborn souls, creating a quiet atmosphere for reflection. This visit offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Japan's spiritual traditions while enjoying the harmony between nature, history, and Buddhist culture.
Lunch at Kamakura station
After visiting Hase Temple, enjoy a short ride on the charming Enoden (Enoshima Electric Railway), one of Japan's most beloved local trains. Running between Kamakura and the nearby coastal towns, the Enoden offers a glimpse of everyday life as it passes through quiet neighborhoods, narrow streets, and scenic landscapes before arriving at Kamakura Station.
It's then time to enjoy lunch and experience the local flavors of Kamakura. You may choose to relax at a traditional Japanese restaurant, where you can savor fresh seafood, handmade soba noodles, or seasonal specialties in a welcoming atmosphere. Alternatively, explore the lively Komachi Street, a bustling shopping lane filled with local food stalls, cafés, and specialty shops. Sample a variety of delicious treats such as freshly made rice crackers, matcha sweets, croquettes, or local seafood snacks while browsing unique souvenirs and handcrafted goods. Whether you prefer a leisurely meal or a fun food-hopping experience, this stop offers an enjoyable taste of Kamakura's culinary culture and vibrant local life.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and Hokokuji temple/Sugimotodera temple
After lunch, continue to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura's most important Shinto shrine and the spiritual heart of the ancient samurai capital. Founded in the 11th century and later expanded by the first shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, the shrine has long been dedicated to Hachiman, the guardian deity of the samurai. Stroll along the spacious grounds, admire the elegant vermilion buildings, and learn about the shrine's deep connection to Japan's warrior culture and history.
If time permits, the tour may continue to Hokokuji Temple, renowned for its tranquil bamboo grove where sunlight filters through towering green stalks, creating a peaceful retreat from the city's bustle. You may also enjoy a cup of freshly prepared matcha while taking in the serene surroundings. Alternatively, visit Sugimotodera temple, believed to be Kamakura's oldest temple. With its moss-covered stone steps and quiet woodland setting, the temple offers a glimpse into the timeless beauty and spiritual atmosphere that have inspired pilgrims for centuries. These optional visits provide a deeper appreciation of Kamakura's rich cultural heritage before returning to the next destination.
Kamakura station
By approximately 3:30 p.m., return to Kamakura Station to begin your journey back. Depending on traffic conditions and your schedule, travel by taxi or train to Yokohama Port for your cruise departure or continue directly to the airport for your onward flight. I will select the most suitable transportation to ensure a smooth, comfortable, and timely return, bringing your memorable day in Kamakura to a perfect conclusion.
