Atago Shrine - Guardian of Fire and Mountain Spirits
Situated atop Mount Atago, this sacred shrine is the head of over 900 Atago shrines across Japan. For centuries, it has been revered as a protector against fire.
Dating back to the early 8th century, Atago Shrine has long served as a place of spiritual training for monks. The shrine is known as the home of the mythical Tengu—mischievous mountain spirits often seen with wild boars, said to guard the shrine.
After the rewarding climb, you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking panoramic view of Kyoto.
Tsukinowa-dera Temple: A Hidden Sanctuary in the Mountains
Tsukinowa-dera is an isolated Buddhist temple with over 1,200 years of history. It houses precious treasures, including serene Buddha statues from the Heian period.
Reaching the temple requires a one-hour walk. Surrounded by untouched nature, the temple offers a rare sense of stillness and spiritual calm.
This hidden gem is lovingly cared for by a solitary female monk, who has quietly tended to its sacred grounds for many years. This visit is a soulful encounter with Japan’s timeless spirit.
Kuya Waterfall - A Hidden Haven of Nature and Spirit
Nestled deep in a quiet valley, Kuya Waterfall is a pristine cascade surrounded by gentle forest and rows of Buddha statues. This sacred spot was once visited by the famous priest Kuya in the 10th century, who came here for spiritual training and meditation.
Today, the waterfall remains a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and seekers of calm. Its pure waters and tranquil surroundings offer a refreshing escape from the busy city—and a glimpse into Japan’s spiritual heritage.
Even now, some visitors come here for quiet mental and spiritual practice. If we are fortunate enough to meet them, we kindly observe with respect and silence, honoring the sacred atmosphere of this hidden sanctuary.
