Ever wondered what makes someone fall for Japan and never leave? Spend a day with me seeing Japan the way I see it, in the less-explored corners of Kyoto. Geek out at a museum of 3,000 anime figures, dig through a retro game shop, enjoy a lunch of real Japanese home cooking, sip tea at a quiet Zen temple, and climb to a hilltop shrine for sweeping city views. Then soak in a 100-year-old bathhouse and toast the day with locals. This is the Kyoto I chose, and I’d love to share it with you!

Itinerary

10:00 AM

Meeting Point

Imadegawa Station「今出川駅」

- Let's meet in front of the main gate of Daishoji Monzeki「大聖寺門跡」, a historic imperial convent temple right outside Exit 2 of Imadegawa Station on the Karasuma Subway Line. Just come up the stairs and you're there. It's a calm, easy-to-find spot, and the site itself has a great story to kick off our day. I'll send you a photo of the exact spot and my contact details before the tour. Please arrive by 9:50.

10:30 AM

Anime Figure Museum「京都西陣たてくんミュージアム」

Step into a renovated Kyoto townhouse packed with around 3,000 figures from anime, tokusatsu, and classic transforming hero series. Every figure was handpicked by the curator, who also built each display scene by hand, and I'll gladly translate any questions you have for him. Whether you grew up on these shows or are just discovering them, it's a fun, nostalgic look at the heroes that shaped Japanese pop culture. As a bonus, we can also stop by a retro game store just around the corner to dig through classic consoles and games.

12:00 PM

Tojiin「等持院

Step into Tojiin, a quiet Zen temple founded in the 1300s as the family temple of the Ashikaga shoguns, who ruled Japan for over two centuries. Inside, a hall lined with lifelike wooden statues of the shoguns brings their history to life. Then relax with a bowl of matcha while gazing over a beautiful pond garden. Despite its history, Tojiin sees few visitors, making it one of Kyoto's best-kept secrets. (Admission and matcha not included.)

01:40 PM

Lunch at Kodo Shoten「食堂 木洞商店」

Enjoy a lunch of real Japanese home cooking at a cozy neighborhood cafe where almost everything is made by hand. From the interior and tableware to the seasonings and ingredients, everything is either made by the owners themselves or sourced from local producers and artisans they know personally. It's the kind of warm meal you'd be served in a Japanese home. (Lunch cost not included.)

03:00 PM

Takeisao Shrine「建勲神社」

Climb the stone steps of Funaokayama, a small hill in the heart of northern Kyoto, to Takeisao Shrine, dedicated to one of Japan's most legendary warlords. At the top, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views over the city and the surrounding mountains, a view few visitors ever see. It's also a chance to experience a Shinto shrine and see how it differs from the Buddhist temple we visited earlier.

04:30 PM

Funaoka Onsen「船岡温泉」

Unwind at Funaoka Onsen, a beloved neighborhood bathhouse that has been soaking locals since 1923. Now a registered cultural property, it's famous for its ornate woodcarvings and retro atmosphere, and it's tattoo-friendly too. Before you head in, I'll walk you through proper bathhouse etiquette so you can soak like a local. It's the perfect way to ease your legs after a day of exploring. Bring your own towel and shampoo, or rent them there. (Entry fee and rentals not included.)

(If you’d prefer to skip the onsen, I can take you to other great spots in the neighborhood to end the night instead, such as a former bathhouse turned restaurant, cozy local bars, or a traditional tachinomi (standing bar), etc.)

About Tour Guide Seth S.

Howdy everyone! My name is Seth. I’m an American from North Carolina, and I’ve been living in Japan for several years now. After studying in Osaka and working at a town hall in Miyazaki for three years, I’m now writing the next chapter of my story with a luxury travel company here in Kyoto.

I’m a practitioner of karate, kendo, and jujitsu, a composer of Japanese haiku, and a researcher of Japanese Buddhism. Those are some of my specialties, but I’m forever a student who loves learning about all things Japan.

I hope to help you paint a unique picture of Japan on your canvas, and I’m excited to join you on your journey and help you fall in love with this country just as I did.
