Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic castles, located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. It was originally built in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, as a strategic defense point between Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). The castle is renowned for its distinctive golden shachihoko (mythical tiger-headed carp) that sit atop the roof of the main keep.

Key Features:

• Design: The castle features massive stone walls, wide moats, and an elegant five-story donjon (main keep), which was once among the largest in Japan.

• Golden Shachihoko: These gilded ornaments symbolize protection against fire and are a famous emblem of the city.

• Hommaru Palace: The recently reconstructed palace within the grounds showcases authentic Edo-period architecture with elaborate gold-leaf sliding doors and traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Historical Significance:

• Japan’s First National Treasure (国宝第1号): Nagoya Castle’s main keep was designated as National Treasure No.1 in 1930 under Japan’s national heritage system. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during World War II bombings in 1945, but has since been reconstructed.

• A wooden reconstruction of the original main tower is currently planned to restore historical accuracy.

11:30 AM

Lunch at Atsuta Horaiken

Atsuta Horaiken is one of the most famous and prestigious restaurants in Nagoya, best known for its signature dish, hitsumabushi—a unique way of eating grilled eel (unagi) over rice. Established in the 1870s, the restaurant has become a culinary landmark.

Highlights:

• Hitsumabushi: The dish is served with various condiments and broth. Diners enjoy it in three ways: as-is, with toppings, and finally with tea or broth poured over (a style similar to ochazuke).

• Heritage: With over 140 years of history, Atsuta Horaiken is beloved for its carefully grilled eel with a secret sauce passed down for generations.

• Location: Conveniently located near Atsuta Shrine, making it a perfect stop during a visit to the sacred site.

12:40 PM

Atsuta Shrine

Atsuta Shrine, located in southern Nagoya, is one of Shinto’s most main shrines. It is believed to have been established over 1,900 years ago and enshrines the sacred Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi—one of the three imperial regalia of Japan, said to represent the virtue of valor.

Key Details:

• Spiritual Importance: Second only to Ise Grand Shrine in terms of prestige, Atsuta Shrine receives over 9 million travellers every year.

• Cultural Treasures: The shrine houses many national treasures and important cultural properties, including swords and ancient documents.

• Atmosphere: Despite its urban location, the shrine is surrounded by a peaceful forest and traditional architecture, providing a tranquil spiritual experience.

01:30 PM

Optional stop at Osu Kannon & Shopping Street

Ōsu Kannon is one of Nagoya’s most famous Buddhist temples. Originally built in the 14th century, it was moved to its current location in the 1600s. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and is known for its beautiful red architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors often come to pray, take photos, and enjoy traditional culture.

Right next to the temple is the vibrant Ōsu Shopping Street, a lively maze of over 1,000 shops and restaurants. Here you can find everything from vintage clothing, electronics, and anime goods to local street food and traditional Japanese souvenirs. It’s a great place to explore, eat, and experience the mix of old and new Japan.

Ōsu is perfect for a half-day visit—whether you’re looking to learn about Japanese history, shop for unique items, or just enjoy the local vibe.

Tour Important Information

・This tour might involve a lot of walking, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

・Popular restaurants in Japan often require reservations weeks or even months in advance. Especially those that have received Gold or Silver awards on Tabelog (a highly respected restaurant review site, like Japan’s version of Michelin) are extremely hard to book. If you’re interested in dining at such places, please let me know as early as possible.

・For restaurants that don’t take reservations, there can be long waiting line, sometimes over an hour. I will do my best to adjust the schedule to avoid this, but if there is a line, I’ll stand in line for you. So you can explore the area freely, and I will call you when your table is ready.

・Please let me know in advance if you have any food allergies or other dietary restrictions.

・Since we are traveling on a private van, we can carry some bigger luggages.

・Some places does not accept credit cards, so you might need cash.

About Tour Guide Masayuki K.

Hello!

my name is Masa

“Private Car Tour Guide”, anywhere in Japan.

Just send me a message of where and what you wanna do!

——-

I was born in Japan and grew up in the United States.

After returning to Japan, I've worked all across the country. I spent a year traveling around Japan in a car that I DIY-converted into a camper. I hope to share the experiences and the knowledges of how to enjoy our culture to the most with people from all over the world.

I would like to introduce Japan's beautiful tourist spots that you can enjoy in every season—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—along with local delicacies beloved by the people in each area, and how to enjoy the unique cultures rooted in each region, such as: sushi, wagyu beef, cherry blossoms, rich milk bread, fluffy pancakes, convenient store's meals and snacks, maid cafe, izakaya(restaurant specialized to drink an alcohol), sake factory and so on.

I can create an original itinerary based on your interests! I’ll guide you with my private van anywhere in Japan from Hokkaido(top part of Japan) to Okinawa(bottom part of Japan). Without being restricted by public transportation schedules, allowing for more freedom in your travel. This is something only someone who has traveled the entire country, like me, can do! I’ll support you to the most, so please enjoy your time in Japan to the fullest!
