10:00 AM

Meeting Point

Motomachi-Station

- We will meet at the single ticket gate of the Minatomirai Line station. First, I’ll give you a brief overview of today’s itinerary.

10:10 AM

Bashamichi (Horse Carriage Street)

The Promenade of Civilization: Our journey begins where Japan’s modernization sparked.

Historical Point: Originally built in the late Edo period to connect the foreign settlement (Kannai) with the Port of Yokohama. This street is a treasure trove of "Japan's firsts," including the first gas streetlamps, roadside trees, and even ice cream.

Architecture: We will admire the majestic dome of the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History (formerly the Yokohama Specie Bank), a symbol of Yokohama’s former glory as a global financial hub.

11:30 AM

Lunch: Katsuretsu-an (Bashamichi Main Branch)

Culinary History: Established in 1927. Dine in an interior associated with the famous woodblock artist Shiko Munakata.

The Dish: Experience the "Katsuretsu" (cutlet), a dish that evolved uniquely in Japan. We’ll discuss the history of their secret sauce and the legendary tenderness of the meat—so soft it can be cut with chopsticks.

01:00 PM

Minato Mirai: From Shipyards to Future City

Historical Point: A short walk from Bashamichi brings us to the ultra-modern Minato Mirai. This area was once the site of massive Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyards.

The Contrast: While it is now a cutting-edge metropolis, we will visit the Dockyard Garden (an Important Cultural Property) to see the stone remnants of the old dry docks. We’ll contrast 100-year-old shipbuilding technology with the soaring heights of the Landmark Tower.

02:30 PM

Yamate & Harbor View Park

Memories of the Settlement: We head up the hill to the former foreign residential district.

Historical Point: At Harbor View Park, we’ll discuss the era when British and French troops were stationed here.

Western Houses: We will visit historic residences like the Ehrismann Residence and Berrick Hall, exploring the lives of early diplomats and merchants and the city’s resilient recovery after the Great Kanto Earthquake.

04:00 PM

Motomachi Shopping Street

The Merchant District: Descending the hill, we enter a street that originally formed to serve the daily needs of the Yamate foreigners.

Historical Point: Discover the roots of "Hamatora" (Yokohama Traditional) fashion and the origins of Japanese bakery culture at Uchiki Pan, alongside high-end jewelry and Western apparel.

05:30 PM

Isezakicho: Post-War Culture & Local Vibrancy

Historical Point: A contrast to the glamorous hills, this was the heart of entertainment for the common people.

Music & Influence: After WWII, this area was heavily influenced by the U.S. Occupation forces, becoming a hub for Jazz and the setting for famous songs like "Blue Light Yokohama." Crossing the Miyakobashi Bridge from here takes us straight into the soulful Noge district.

06:30 PM

Noge: The True Face of Yokohama

From Black Markets to Nightlife: Following the war, this area—once reduced to ashes—became a massive black market that fueled Yokohama’s recovery energy.

A Cultural Melting Pot: Right next to the glitzy cinemas of Isezakicho, Noge became a "social hub for the people," where laborers and merchants drank side-by-side.

Modern Charm: Today, it is a mecca for "Senbero" (getting tipsy for 1,000 yen), popular with younger generations. Yet, a step into the back alleys reveals long-established yakitori stalls and traditional eateries that have preserved their post-war atmosphere for decades.
