Sarushima: Tokyo Bay’s Hidden Island Getaway
Sarushima, meaning “Monkey Island,” is the only natural island in Tokyo Bay — a true hidden gem just minutes from Yokosuka. Step off the ferry and into a peaceful escape where time seems to slow down. Stroll along quiet beaches, wander through forested trails, and explore mysterious military ruins now wrapped in lush greenery. With its Ghibli-like atmosphere and rich history, Sarushima offers a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and nostalgia.

Meeting Point
Yokosuka-Chuo Station
- The island is off the coast of Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture and the closest station will be Yokosuka-Chuo. Let's meet here and walk towards the port together
Sarushima Tour
We will walk the whole island, exploring historic ruins, such as brick tunnels, old gun batteries, stone paths and walls, and learning why this site is called a "real-life Laputa" due to its overgrown ruins and mystical vibe (think Castle in the Sky by Studio Ghibli).
The site is called Monkey Island. Will we find monkeys? Let's find it out.
Return to Yokosuka
For people who wish to stay on the island longer, we can have a picnic, enjoy some refreshing Yokosuka Craft Beer and finger food and take the next ferry back.
For people who wish to visit the souvenir store and have lunch, we can return to Yokosuka during noon, I will introduce you to some amazing foodie options (navy burger/curry, ramen, seafood rice bowl, craft beer, and dessert always)
Ending Point
Farewell at Yokosuka-Chuo
