Meeting Point
JR Sapporo Station or the lobby of your hotel
- If your hotel is away from the center of Sapporo, Sapor JR station will be the best meeting point. The first destination, the former Hokkaido government building is a five-minute walk away. If your hotel is in the center of Sapporo, we will meet at the hotel lobby.
The Former Hokkaido Government Building
The first stop is the Former Hokkaido Government Building, located just a 5-minute walk from Sapporo Station. Hokkaido’s development began shortly after the samurai era ended. In 1869, the Hokkaido Development Commission was established on this site, marking the start of Hokkaido’s transformation from a remote area into a developed region. This historic red-brick building symbolizes the island’s development and is an excellent photo spot.
Sapporo Clock Tower
The Sapporo Clock Tower is a well-known landmark of the city. While it is a historic building, it also houses a museum where visitors can learn about Sapporo’s history. However, in this 4-hour tour, we will not enter the museum. Instead, we will take photos and provide an explanation about the building’s history. If you are interested, you may revisit it later when you have more time.
Odori Park
Odori Park offers a different atmosphere in every season. Many events take place here, including Japan’s largest beer garden in summer and the Autumn Fest, where you can enjoy specialties from various regions of Hokkaido. In winter, the park hosts the famous Sapporo Snow Festival, attracting visitors from around the world to see the magnificent snow sculptures.
Nijo Market
It is a seafood market offering fresh sea products from the seas around Hokkaido. The market also features numerous restaurants serving seafood rice bowls. Many customers can be seen waiting in line in front of the restaurants. The market opens early in the morning, but many shops close by late afternoon.
Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade
Located just a short walk from Nijo Market, Tanukikoji is Hokkaido’s oldest shopping arcade. It is lined with various kinds of shops and eateries, and is a lively spot visited by local citizens and tourists.
Hokkaido Shrine
Next, we will take the subway from Odori Park and walk to Hokkaido Shrine, a representative Shinto shrine of Hokkaido. Situated in Maruyama Park, it has a vast, green-filled precinct that is popular among Sapporo residents.
Shiroi Koibito Park
The last stop of the tour is Shiroi Koibito Park, a theme park operated by one of Hokkaido’s most famous confectionery makers. The park features buildings that look like European castles, exhibits related to cookies and chocolate, and a beautiful garden. These features attract many tourists to the park.
The garden is beautifully designed, offering many photo-worthy spots. “Shiroi Koibito” is the name of a cookie that is one of the most popular souvenirs in Japan. Inside the building, you can observe the production line of the cookie.
The admission fee is 800 yen. After exploring Shiroi Koibito Park, we will return to central Sapporo by subway.
