- Inside of Sapporo Station at The White Circular Stone Structure at the south exit sliding doors of JR Sapporo Station.
The Old Brick Government Building
The Former Hokkaido Government Office, affectionately known as the "Red Brick Office" (Akarenga), is one of Sapporo’s most iconic historic buildings. Built in 1888 in the American Neo-Baroque style, it served as the administrative headquarters for Hokkaido’s early development.
Once inside, you’ll find displays on Hokkaido’s history, development, and culture, including documents, maps, and pioneer artifacts.
The Sapporo Clock Tower
The Sapporo Clock Tower is one of the oldest and most iconic landmarks in Sapporo, dating back to 1878. Originally built as part of the Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University), it was designed in American colonial style and features a large, still-functioning mechanical clock. The building itself is a rare example of early Western-style wooden construction in Japan. The working clock on the tower has run continuously for over 140 years. The mini museum on the 1st floor features numerous exhibits of Sapporo's early history. A must visit!
2jo Fish Market
Nijo Market is Sapporo’s historic seafood market, operating since the early 1900s. Located just east of Odori Park, it features a compact grid of stalls and small eateries run by local vendors.
Lunch(45min-1hr) will be eaten here. Obviously, this locale is for seafood lovers only. Lunch dishes include: crabs (king, snow, hairy), sea urchin, scallops, salmon roe, and seasonal fish. Popular choice and highly recommended for lunch would be the "Kaisen-don" (Seafood Bowls)with your choice of toppings.
The Court of Appeals Museum
the Sapporo Court of Appeals Museum built in 1926, stands as a testament to Japan's architectural modernization. Constructed using Sapporo soft stone, the building showcases a symmetrical Renaissance-style façade adorned with reliefs of the Goddess of Justice and symbols of law, such as scales and a sword .
A notable highlight is the restored courtroom, which offers visitors an immersive experience into early 20th-century judicial proceedings. This courtroom is periodically used for mock trials, allowing participants to role-play as judges, prosecutors, or defense attorneys, providing an educational insight into the legal processes of the era. This mock courtroom will be the highlight of our tour visit.
On the way to this museum we will pass by The Sapporo TV Tower. Although we will not go up, your guide will briefly explain the history of this tower.
Cocono's "sake tasting" or Susukino Ramen alley
At this juncture of the tour, the guest can decide EITHER a brief "sake tasting" at a sake stand bar the guide is familiar with OR to enjoy a bowl of ramen at the famous Susukino Ramen Alley. This choice can be left to the discretion of the guest. The guide is fine with either choice.
***sake tasting: enjoy a small glass of 3 types of sake.
1. Junmai (純米): made with only rice, water, yeast, and koji (no
added alcohol).
2. Honjozo (本醸造): a small amount of distilled alcohol added to
enhance aroma and smoothness.
3. Regular Ginjo (吟醸): Premium sake with higher rice polishing
and refined brewing techniques.(with added alcohol).
Susukino Ramen Alley: Cozy, bustling, and nostalgic.
Come hungry and try one of the house specialties.
A. Miso Ramen (signature of Sapporo): Rich, savory broth with
thick curly noodles, topped with corn, butter, pork, bean
sprouts, and garlic.
B. Shio (salted) Ramen: Lighter and clearer, still full of flavor.
C. Shoyu (soy sauce) Ramen: A bit deeper and saltier than shio, but less heavy than miso.
All good, affordable and delicious. In winter, highly recommended to warm the body and soul.
The JR Observation Tower38
The final stop on our tour is the JR Tower Observatory Tower38.
This is Sapporo’s tallest observation deck, perched 160 meters above ground on the 38th floor of JR Tower, directly connected to Sapporo Station. It offers sweeping 360° views of the city’s grid layout. The observatory is renowned for its panoramic vistas, including a unique feature: the men's restroom offers an exceptional view of the cityscape. Great view looking out. No worries, no one can see in.
Ending Point
