(How to enjoy) You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the one-kilometer road leading to the castle after you get off the train and, once inside the precincts, you cannot spare even a moment without marveling at the sight of an ancient technology and human wisdom, as well as the huge rocks building up the protection walls. Not only seeing the buildings, you can also sit on the grass and enjoy having lunch with your family members or friends. (Others) The entrance fee is 600 yen per person and the JR Osaka Loop Line train fare is 300 yen for the ride from Osaka to Osaka-jo-koen station. The fare for the ride between Kyoto and Osaka, meanwhile, is 510 yen.

Kumano-Kodo Choishi-michi/One day tour
Walk one of World Heritage Kumano-Kodo trails "Choishi-michi" which is nearest to Osaka and Kyoto. It is an antient access way to Koyasan fonded by the great monk Kukai. Its name is coming from the 180 stupas (Choishi) stand along the trail, which people have been prayed to. The total distance is 22km, takes roughly 7 hours without transportation/rest if you have good physical ability. The trail mostly keeps its original style when opened.

Tour of Osaka Tenjin-matsuri Festival / Cruising on the river
(Highlights) Held in the evening of July 25 each year, this festival attracts more than a million spectators. Dozens of rafts full of invited, kimono-clad people towed by small boats go upstream the major river in the heart of Osaka, while on-lookers watch from the river bank, nearby bridges and the pier. There stand stalls selling varieties of food, filling in every nook and corner of the river bank. Thousands of fireworks are shot up into the night sky to the great enjoyment of visitors. (Origin of the festival) The myth says that in the year 951, two years after God descended from heaven and settled in the Tenmangu Shrine, they flowed a sacred float in the river from the nearby beach and a funeral hall was built and "misogi" purification ceremony held at the shore where the float reached. Then, those living near the shrine and worshipers built a ship to contributed to the shrine. (How to enjoy) You can see rafts full of "yukata"-clad people in the festive mood on board slowly going upstream the river, while being soaked in the cool evening atmosphere. After dark, fireworks setting the skies ablaze make you sigh in joyful excitement. You can have whatever food you like at the stalls built in the riverbank. (Transportation) The JR train fare from Kyoto station to Osaka station is 560 yen and the subway fare, 180 yen. (Others) Since the venue is very crowded, please do your utmost in protecting yourself from being bumped by others and from theft. If you are there on the days other than the festival day, you can enjoy cruising on board a sightseeing ship called "Osaka water-bus" for a fee of 1,700 yen for one-hour ride. You can see the landscape of Osaka city from different angles as the ship sails along the river. Daytime only, however.

ABENO HARUKAS building has just opened on March 7th, 2014. It's the tallest building in Japan with a height of 300 meters, exceeding even the Yokohama Landmark Tower by 4 meters. The Abeno and the Ten-noji area is the commercial center and transportation hub of Southern Osaka. Abeno Harukas has an observatory deck on the 59th and 60th floor, "Tenku Teien" or Sky Garden on the 58th floor and an observatory restaurant on the 57th floor. The Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel is on the 19th, the 20th floor, and also from the 38th to the 55th floor. Offices are on the 21st to the 37th floor. There's a museum on the 16th floor and the Kintetsu Department Store covers everything from the 14th floor down to the B2 level. In particular, the 360 degree panoramic view of Osaka city from the top floor is a picturesque night scene because there aren't any high buildings around the ABENO HARUKAS. Inside the Kintetsu Department Store you will find many luxury brand boutiques, shops and restaurants. I'm sure you'll enjoy shopping and eating there. There are also many restaurants at Q's mall, Mio, or Tennoji Station Building, which are buildings around the ABENO HARUKAS. The Fukuchiyama Abandoned Railway Hike is one of the hiking course that uses the abandoned railway line between Namase Station and Takedao Station on former Japan National Railways Fukuchiyama Line, was closed in 1986. Stretching for about 4.7km along the valley, the remains of the railway including 6 tunnels and 3 bridges from when locomotive once ran remain intact. The trail is easy enough for even beginners to hike and can be completed in about 2-3 hours at an average walking pace.

“Pleasant day in Osaka”
My wife and I had a very pleasant day with our guide Makoto in Osaka. He impressed us with his deep knowledge of Japanese history visiting Osaka Castle, and we were impressed how well prepared he was when we visited Doshomachi Street, normally not on Osaka tours, but interesting a this is where the Japanese pharmaceutical industry originated with Tanabe in the 17th Century, and there are interesting company museums and exhibits of how the industry evolved from trading chinese herbal medicines to modern age.

Thank you for your nice comments. I also had a very pleasant day because I had a good chance to learn about Japanese history again through this tour. Switzerland has nice big pharmaceutical industry even though it is small country. I learned that both Japan and Switzerland have similar background to develop such special industry of pharmacy and precision machinery such as watch because we do not have much natural resource.
