The two locations 1) Nagasaki City and the history of the Atomic Bombing and the arrival of foreigners. 2) The coastal area of Sotome where Christians continued their outlawed faith in secret for 200 years. 1882 the Christians rejoined the church. A French Jesuit de Rotz spent his life ministering and teaching the poor women crafts. Two of his Catholic churches are now World Heritage sites. Lastly, Endo Shusaku wrote his novel, Silence, here, which is also Martin Scorsese's 2016 movie.

09:00 AM

Meeting Point

The arrival place in Nagasaki City

10:30 AM

Shitsu Catholic Church

The church was consecrated in 1882 and was commemorated as a World Heritage Site in 2018. The people of the Shitsu Village of Sotome were discovered as hidden Christians on the mid 1800s. The French priest Marc Marie De Rotz came there, convinced them of the nature of their faith, encouraged them to regain their Catholic faith, and continued taking care of them until his death and burial there in 1914. He helped design the structure of the church and used much of his own money to build it.

11:30 AM

Ono Church

Father De Rotz noticed the converted Christians in the Ono neighborhood and realized that they lived too far from Shitsu to visit the main church, so he helped them design and build their own simple church in Ono. Because De Rotz was instrumental in building the church, it was included as a World Heritage Site.

12:30 PM

Simple local lunch

The Roadside Station of Yuhigaoka Sotome. Besides selling locally grown vegetables, there is a small restaurant with a spectacular view of the neighborhood and sea.

01:30 PM

Endo Shusaku Literary Museum

The famous novelist Endo Shusaku stayed in Shitsu and eventually wrote the world famous novel Silence. It tells the story of two Portuguese Jesuit priests who smuggled themselves into Japan to continue taking care of the hidden Christians of the area after Christianity had been outlawed in Japan. Endo's story is set in Shitsu. His novel has been remade into a film by Martin Scorsese in 2016 by the same name. It is an epic historical drama. It stars Andrew Garfield and Liam Leesom.

About Tour Guide Mark T.

I am fascinated by the rich history and culture of the city of Nagasaki and the surrounding area and I take great pleasure in introducing people to what is one of the most unique locations in the world. It is a place of dreams, ambitions, tragedies, resilience and physical beauty.

As a resident of Nagasaki for over 40 years and a professor at a university, I have had decades of experience guiding foreign guests around the city and other locations near the city. I have also guided my Japanese students on cultural trips to the U.S., Canada and the U.K. around 20 times. In addition, I have decades of experience conducting courses and lectures on Nagasaki history, Japanese society, Japanese history and contemporary Japanese literature.

Although I greatly enjoy encouraging learning and experiences on others, I also thrive on continuing to learn more and every tour is a rewarding experience for me as well.

Great overview of Nagasaki

Mark is easy to chat to and our tour went amazingly quickly. Mark is just starting out as a tour guide and is open to what interests you, as well as showing the most significant places in his adopted home. I can recommend a day out with Mark.

Thank you Lydia for your kind review of your visit. I hope the rest of your tour went well.

Mark is a beautiful human and a memorable guide

Mark is Wisconsin born and has been a professor in Nagasaki since 1982. Having a chance to have someone like Mark personally take you through Nagasaki is a huge opportunity. He not only shows you the many important sites and gives you the back story on the history he is flexible to tailor his guiding to meet your interest and needs. This is no canned tour. It is custom made by you. And did I mention he knows the best places to eat and helps to translate the menu and guide your ordering. So fun. So recommended.

Mark T.

Martin, thank you for your kind review. You and your pair were pleasant and interested guests. It was useful to know that you had been to a lot of other places before Nagasaki and were a little worn out. Knowing that I kept the pace down, but we were still able to see most of the major sights. Hope that the rest of your trip went well.
