This tour introduces you to the main tourist locations in the city. The first, Suwa Shrine, is cultural. It is the main shrine and the spiritual heart of the community. The rest are historical, spanning Nagasaki's founding as trading port and Christian safe haven, the crackdown on foreigners and Christianity, Japan's isolation, and finally the tragedy of the Atomic Bombing. Because I will use my car, we can experience more sites with less exertion, more privacy, and a better chances to talk.

Itinerary

This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!

09:00 AM

Meeting Point

Meeting Point

- At your hotel, or Nagasaki Station (if arriving that morning), or Nagasaki Port (if a cruise ship passenger)

09:30 AM

Suwa Shinto Shrine

Suwa-san is the main Shinto shrine of Nagasaki. It is also the home of the Kunchi Festival in October, one of the three most important festivals in Japan.

10:00 AM

Nagasaki History Museum

Experience a quick and illuminating introduction to the history of Nagasaki.

11:30 AM

26 Martyrs Site and Museum

The 1597 execution of Japanese and foreign priests remains one of the more significant martyrdoms in the history of the Catholic Church. We probably will not have time to take in the museum, unless it is of special interest to you. In that case I suggest cutting out the visit to the Hypocenter.

12:00 PM

Lunch

01:00 PM

Peace Park

Located high on a hill overlooking the city, this portion of the Peace area is the brightest part. At the center is the famous Nagasaki Peace Statue, noting the prosperity that peace can bring and warning against the use of nuclear weapons in the future. Around the sides are statues from various nations around the world offering their hope for a more peaceful world.

01:30 PM

Atomic Bomb Hypocenter Park

This solemn park surrounds the haunting black stone monolith that marks the hypocenter of the plutonium atomic bomb explosion 500 meters above.

02:00 PM

Atomic bomb Museum

The displays lay out the story of the atomic bombing, the city before and after, especially emphasizing the effects on ordinary people and everyday objects on this far-from-everyday event. Displays also encourage visitors to contemplate the current state of issues surrounding war and peace.

03:00 PM

One-legged Torii

The two-legged torii gate, a typical entryway to a Shinto shrine, was blown in half by the shockwave, but astoundingly half of the gate still stands. It is a testament to the capriciousness of this indiscriminate kind of weapon.

03:30 PM

Dejima Museum

The merchants of Nagasaki created a man-made island in the bay to house (and virtually imprison) foreign traders. It was home to the members of the Dutch East Indies Trading Company for over 200 years while Japan was closed off to the outside world. The island has had the sea filled in around it, but on the original site many of the original structures have been reconstructed and cleverly display exhibits on the life of the inhabitants, trade, and intercultural encounters.

04:30 PM

Return to the original meeting point

Ending Point

Return to the meeting place or any other reasonable location.

About Tour Guide Mark T.

I am fascinated by the rich history and culture of the city of Nagasaki and the surrounding area and I take great pleasure in introducing people to what is one of the most unique locations in the world. It is a place of dreams, ambitions, tragedies, resilience and physical beauty.

As a resident of Nagasaki for over 40 years and a professor at a university, I have had decades of experience guiding foreign guests around the city and other locations near the city. I have also guided my Japanese students on cultural trips to the U.S., Canada and the U.K. around 20 times. In addition, I have decades of experience conducting courses and lectures on Nagasaki history, Japanese society, Japanese history and contemporary Japanese literature.

Although I greatly enjoy encouraging learning and experiences on others, I also thrive on continuing to learn more and every tour is a rewarding experience for me as well.
