Kyoto West: Arashiyama, Tenryuji, Ninnaji, Ryoanji, Kinkakuji, Kitano Tenmangu, and Kamishichiken
Kyoto’s west side, run in reverse of the usual route. We begin among the towering stalks of Arashiyama’s bamboo grove, step straight into Tenryuji’s World Heritage Zen garden, and stroll the Katsura River to Togetsukyo Bridge. The retro Randen tram then takes us north to Ninnaji’s five-story pagoda, the Ryoanji rock garden and Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion. We end at Kitano Tenmangu shrine and the quiet lanes of Kamishichiken, Kyoto’s oldest geisha district.

Meeting Point
Your accomodation in Osaka.
- I’ll meet you at your accommodation and escort you by train to Saga-Arashiyama Station, next to the bamboo grove. From central Osaka the trip takes about an hour; from a Kyoto hotel it’s shorter. The meeting time above is for an Osaka hotel and an 8:00 start in Arashiyama. I’ll confirm the exact time once I know where you’re staying. Early Start for Photographers: Want the bamboo grove with morning light filtering through the stalks, potentially before most visitors arrive? Choose the early start: we arrive at the grove by 7:00, that will give you plenty of time to compose multiple shots of this unworldly scene, we then enter Tenryuji by its north gate right at the 8:30 opening. From Osaka, that means meeting at about 6:00. I’ll show you the paths and angles that work best for photos. Please note: an early start means fewer visitors, but I can’t guarantee empty sites. Crowds depend on the season, day and weather, and popular spots can be busy even early, especially in cherry blossom and autumn-leaves seasons and on weekends and holidays.
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
We will begin our tour from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.
Tenryuji
Enter by the north gate from the grove; Sogenchi pond garden. Gates open at 8:30 AM.
Togetsukyo Bridge
Riverside stroll along the Katsura River with mountain views.
Lunch in Arashiyama
Your choices of Yuba, Yudofu, soba or riverside set lunch.
Randen tram to Omuro-Ninnaji
Quick transfer at Katabiranotsuji; about 20 min.
Ninnaji
Former imperial temple, five-story pagoda and palace gardens.
Ryoanji
10 min walk along Kinukake-no-michi; the world famous rock garden.
Kinkakuji
20 min walk. The Golden Pavilion reflected in its pond.
Kitano Tenmangu
Shrine to the god of learning; maple garden open in autumn.
Kamishichiken
Kyoto's oldest geisha district. Buses and Randen Kitano-Hakubaicho Station nearby.
Begin return trip to Osaka
If you opt for a dinner plan (please see details in Important Information), I’ll book a restaurant that suits your tastes, join you for the meal to share more about the food and culture, and escort you back to your accommodation afterward.
If you choose the no-dinner option, depending on where your accommodation is, I will escort you back via the best route home.

About Tour Guide Toshi T.
Hello! I’m Toshi, your local insider and itinerary planner in Kansai.
I’m new to GoWithGuide, but I’ve spent over 35 years helping people enjoy life’s most meaningful moments in beautiful places.
For decades, I was a destination wedding photographer in San Francisco. My clients came for the photos, but they remembered the whole experience: carefully planned journeys around historic City Hall and the city’s hidden viewpoints, with every detail handled so they could relax.
From 2016 to 2018, I led the Canon KelbyOne Worldwide Photowalk, guiding groups of up to 20 along scenic San Francisco routes to support the Spring of Hope Kenya Children’s Home.
Today, I bring that same warm hospitality, careful planning, and eye for beauty to Osaka, Kyoto, and all of Kansai.
Why travel with me?
A local’s eye for the special: I’ll take you beyond the landmarks to quiet side streets, the best viewpoints, and the everyday Japanese life most visitors walk past.
Smooth, stress-free days: After decades of managing tight schedules for international clients, I’ll handle the trains, the timing, and the details so your day feels relaxed.
Tailored to you: Family, couple, or solo, we’ll build the day around your interests and pace, whether that’s history, food, temples, or hidden neighborhoods.
A photographer’s instincts: I won’t run a photography lesson, but I always know where the light is best. I’m happy to point out a great spot or take your picture along the way.
Early start for photographers: Every tour offers an optional early start for the best morning light at the first stop, potentially before most visitors arrive: Fushimi Inari’s torii gates, Arashiyama’s bamboo grove, or Osaka Castle’s grounds before the tower opens at 9:00. I can’t guarantee empty sites, especially in peak seasons and on weekends and holidays.
Let’s skip the crowded, cookie-cutter routes and plan a day in Kansai that shows you Japan’s true soul. Send me a message, and let’s start planning!

Kyoto East: Fushimi Inari, Tofukuji, Kiyomizudera, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Shrine, and Gion on Foot
A full day on Kyoto’s east side, planned so we never backtrack. Climb through thousands of vermilion torii at Fushimi Inari, cross Tofukuji’s maple valley on the Tsutenkyo bridge, and look out over the city from Kiyomizu-dera’s wooden stage. Then wander down the preserved Sannenzaka slopes into Gion, past machiya teahouses and the willow-lined Shirakawa canal, taste your way through Nishiki Market, and end in lantern-lit Pontocho.

Osaka: Osaka Castle, Tsutenkaku, Sumiyoshi Taisha, Namba Yasaka Shrine, Dotonbori Cruise
Castles, shrines and a ride on Osaka’s last streetcar. Walk Osaka Castle’s giant stone walls and moats, then look down on it all from the Osaka Museum of History. After a kushikatsu lunch in retro Shinsekai, the Hankai tram takes us to Sumiyoshi Taisha and its steep red arched bridge. We end at Namba Yasaka Shrine’s giant lion-head stage and the Dotonbori canal, with a short river cruise under the neon and the Glico sign.

Amazing experience retro and classic Japanese culture
You can experience the deep retro side of Osaka that you won't find in guidebooks or online! I'll take you on a tram to the largest shrine in the Kansai region. I'll also take you to a place where you can shop for knives and other traditional Japanese items! The highlight is a visit to a traditional Japanese izakaya. There, you'll be amazed by the Japanese food you've never tried before!

Tour of Osaka-jo Castle
(Highlights) The present castle building looks beautiful, powerful and in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. However, it was the venue of hegemony, bloody conflicts and natural disasters for many centuries. Once you visit the castle, you will be amazed at the magnificent structures, huge moats and the beautiful natural environment. The view from the top of the eight-storied donjon is splendid. You can reach there either by going up the steep stairways or taking an elevator ride. The castle is in the heart and the landmark of Osaka city, where many modern buildings stand. (How to enjoy) You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the one-kilometer road leading to the castle after you get off the train and, once inside the precincts, you cannot spare even a moment without marveling at the sight of an ancient technology and human wisdom, as well as the huge rocks building up the protection walls. Not only seeing the buildings, you can also sit on the grass and enjoy having lunch with your family members or friends. (Others) The entrance fee is 600 yen per person and the JR Osaka Loop Line train fare is 300 yen for the ride from Osaka to Osaka-jo-koen station. The fare for the ride between Kyoto and Osaka, meanwhile, is 510 yen.
