Lost in Old Tokyo Downtown: Explore Yanaka & Nezu
The Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi areas are called “Yanesen”. The stairs leading to Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street is famous as a spot to see Japanese people’s real life. The areas have atmosphere of good old days of Tokyo downtown in 1960’ and also known as a religious town because they have many local temples, shrines and graveyards. There are small shops selling Japanese traditional kitchen items and souvenirs, and sweets shops and stalls basing on a concept of Japanese traditional colors.

Yanaka Cemetery
Yanaka Cemetery is one of Tokyo's most famous graveyards and has the feel of a park with its profuse foliage, including a beautiful alley of cherry trees: a very popular spot in spring when the overhanging branches are heavy with bright blossom. The cemetery is also a beauty spot in autumn, with its many deciduous trees, including numerous gingkos. You can see Japanese traditional way to worship ancestors.

This is a small, off the beaten path museum. Its building was used from 1907 as a residence and atelier by Fumio Asakura, the highest peak of Japan's modern sculpture. Nezu Shrine
Nezu Shrine has a legend to be founded about 1,900 years ago by legendary priest Yamato Takeru no Mikoto. It was built on the current site in 1706 at the order of the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty. It is famous for a tunnel made with lots of vermilon torii gates (red archways). Very good for photos.

“Great start to our four days in Tokyo”
Chiaki was an outstanding guide and made our first full day in Tokyo both enjoyable and incredibly helpful. She picked us up at our hotel and tailored the day to include exactly what we had hoped for, including learning how to use Tokyo's public transportation. She patiently explained the transit system as we traveled, and by the next day we felt confident navigating it on our own. She also took us to beautiful gardens that we never would have discovered by ourselves and to a local temple for a fire ritual that was a real highlight of the day. To help us understand the ceremony without disrupting it, she had prepared printed cards explaining what was happening, and she even reserved seats for us while we stepped away to use the restrooms. It was such a thoughtful touch. At the end of the day, she took us to Senso-ji Temple, which we had requested. Although it was extremely crowded, she shared the history of the temple as we walked through. We were especially glad she had included a visit to a quieter temple earlier in the day, where we could enjoy a more relaxed and authentic experience. Chiaki is knowledgeable, organized, thoughtful, and genuinely cares about giving her guests a great experience. We had a wonderful day and would highly recommend touring Tokyo with her.

Thank you so much Erin, for your thoughtful and detailed review! I’m truly delighted that your first full day in Tokyo was such a positive and memorable experience. It was a pleasure helping you become familiar with Tokyo’s public transportation so you could continue exploring with confidence. I’m also glad you enjoyed the garden and the fire ritual. Thank you for trusting my suggestions. I always hope to introduce my guests not only to Tokyo’s famous landmarks but also to places where they can experience the city’s unique atmosphere at a more relaxed pace. The day was a pleasure for me, too. It was especially interesting when Andy talked about the memories of his first visit to Tokyo, playing Pachinko and getting the rush hour subway! It was fun spending the day with you, and I sincerely appreciate your recommendation. I hope you left Japan with many wonderful memories, and I would be delighted to welcome you back to Tokyo someday! Arigato!

“Not the last!”
This was my second guided tour with Chiaki, and I'm looking forward to it not being my last. She is a remarkable person, always happy to share her knowledge about her city. My first time was a great tour of Shibamata; we had lots of fun. The second was a custom tour, and she remembered my wishes and my tastes. This tour was even better. I hope to see her a third time! I highly recommend Chiaki. She listens to your comments and adjusts the tour to your liking. She is very professional, flexible, and friendly. Book her while you can, as she is in high demand. Chiaki, thank you again.

We will explore the western suburbs of Tokyo in this tour. If you are looking for something different from the crowded tourist attractions in the central part of Tokyo, you will enjoy exploring the western suburbs of Tokyo. I recommend this tour not to first timers but to repeaters who have been to famous places in Tokyo. You will discover traditional spots in the beautiful environment of the suburbs. Weather permitting, lunch in a local restaurant can be replaced by a picnic lunch in a park.
