Originally from Canada, I've been living in Japan for 35 years, most of that in Miyazaki. I speak the language and I know the area better than most locals. In Miyazaki, there is a lack of public transport so I'd be happy to drive you to places like Aoshima (a beautiful beach and surfing hub), Udo Jingu (a unique seaside shrine), the samurai and merchant residences of Obi, and introduce you to the best spots for local food, shopping, or nightlife, as well as let you in on a few hidden secrets of Miyazaki if you have the time.

I’m a local licensed guide based in Kochi Prefecture. I grew up by the Pacific Ocean in Kochi and spent four years each in Tokyo and the United States—giving me both deep local knowledge and a global perspective. Although I’m new to GoWithGuide, I’ve been welcoming international guests for years through my private rental villa in Aki City and as a local guide in Kochi. Working in the travel industry, I know not only the famous landmarks but also the hidden gems of the region. All the photos you see here were taken by me—I enjoy photography, and if you’d like, I’d be happy to capture some memorable shots for you during the tour.

“Tour of the Sekigahara battlefield and museum from Nagoya”
We had a truly wonderful day with Michiko on our recent holiday to Japan. From the point of pick up at our hotel in Nagoya to our return their that evening everything ran smoothly. Michiko was so knowledgeable about this period of history which was just what we wanted. She was such an enjoyable companion that day and we had so many laughs together. The battlefield and museum are well worth visiting. The museum has some fabulous displays of Samurai armour and artefacts and there is a really good cafe there too. The battlefield site is easily accessible - we hired electric bikes from the museum. Thank you Michiko for giving us such a great day!

“Exceptional Tour with Tomio - Highly Recommend!”
Our experience with Tomio was outstanding from start to finish. He’s an incredibly knowledgeable guide who brought the history and culture of the region to life with fascinating stories and insights. His calm professionalism, clear communication, and thoughtful pacing made the day seamless and enjoyable. Having him drive us in his car was an absolute bonus, it made the experience comfortable, efficient, and far more relaxed. We truly appreciated his warmth, attention to detail, and passion for sharing Japan’s heritage. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an informative, engaging, and effortless tour experience.

“Superb Guide!”
Akira N. is extremely knowledgeable, thoughtful, engaging and kind. Our tour of the more authentic neighborhoods of Tokyo started with the magical Hosokawa Garden. On to Zoshigaya neighborhood where we visited the intact 300 year old temple of Kishimojin complete with Tokyo's oldest candy store. Akira brought the neighborhood to life with his engaging stories and impressive grasp of history. We explored the more traditional neighborhood of Sugamo where we enjoyed a delicious Teishoku (Japanese set meal). Our tour finished in the narrow alleyways of Yanaka where we enjoyed observing the lifestyle of the common people of Tokyo. Akira was always thoughtful and thorough with his explanations of the sites and engaged in his answers to our questions. He was patient, considerate, and informative throughout our seven hours together. Although we requested a tour with a more "local" feel, he was very willing to create a tour of the major sites as well. We highly recommend Akira N as an excellent guide to enhance your visit to Tokyo! He is a true professional! Thank you Akira N.! Paul and Charlotte

Akira N.
Dear Paul, Thank you so much for the great review. I am so happy that you enjoyed my favorite part of Tokyo, the beautiful quiet garden in autumn colors, the old temple filled with happy laughter of families (of three generations!) celebrating children's healthy growth or divine blessing, warm exchange with lovely grandma in the store, delicious teishoku in the local diner in the old school Tokyo vibes, and etc, etc, etc... I hope you could get the idea of what it is like to be one of the locals in this city. Through walking in the streets and alleyways of different neighborhoods, and taking trains and street cars, I hope you could feel something that you cannot get from tours hiring car visiting only flamboyant instagramable iconic spots just being busy without being in each of the moments. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your memorable Japan trip this time. It was my pleasure to meet people who have beautiful spirit like you and Charlotte. I am looking forward to another chance to explore my loving city together. Sincerely, Akira

What I wish I knew before going to Japan?
- English is a bigger barrier than expected, especially if you plan on traveling to rural areas. A guide is a great way to practice small phrases and understand pronunciation.
- A JR (Japan Rail) pass comes in handy, so get one at the airport. Japan's public transport system is one of the best in the world, and a preloaded card will cut so much time while keeping you connected to the vast rail grid.
- The vending machines are as iconic as you think they are. Try as many as you possibly can.
- Walking while eating/drinking is rude. It also promotes littering, so take the time to pause and eat.

What you should and shouldn't do in Japan?
- You should - Book accommodation months in advance. The earlier, the better, especially if you're headed to Japan during the peak season of March to May or September to November.
- You shouldn’t - Litter. EVER. Japan prides itself on recycling and keeping its streets clean. Littering is one of the worst things you can do. Keep your trash on you until you find a trash can.
- You should - Keep cash on hand. Though there are cashless facilities, cash is still king, especially in smaller specialty shops and restaurants.
- You shouldn’t - Stick to big cities. There's more to Japan than the bustling streets of Shinjuku or the savory foods of Osaka. Remote tours along the Japanese countryside are just as magical, so talk to your tour guide about picking a great spot.
- You should - learn some Japanese phrases like;
- Sumimasen - Excuse me
- Arigatou Gozaimasu - Thank you
- Konnichiwa - Hello
