Japan Tour Reviews

Toshi is an excellent guide and made our visit wonderful

My husband and I, along with two of our young adult sons, pent two very wet days touring Tokyo with Toshi, who skillfully guided us from place to place, despite the soaking spring rain. Toshi was unfailingly kind, helpful, and informative. I am a curious person and Toshi was a wealth of insight into all things Japanese. His English is excellent, and he also brought us to wonderful restaurants, such as a fantastic sushi restaurant in the seafood market area. We did not request a specific itinerary but left it to our trusty guide; we spent one day touring the east side of the city and the second day going around the west side. We spent eight hours each day with Toshi, who met us outside of our rented flat each morning near Ueno Station. Obviously you can't pack it in and get a big heaping of true Tokyo flavor trying to sort out logistics on your own as a newbie. Toshi took all the stress out of that. We like using public transportation when it's safe and clean, and we enjoyed learning from Toshi so that we could manage a third day on our own without getting confused. Some of my personal favorite places that we visited include the Shinjuku Imperial Gardens - the Sakura were in bloom and the rain kept the crowds in check -- the Meiji Shrine (the most magnificent Shinto shrine that I have seen in a month here in Japan) along with its forest, the amazing view of Tokyo from the top of the Metropolitan building, the Asakusa old town area with the five-story pagoda and the Senso-ji Temple complex, the electric town and hipster/gamer shopping area of Akihabara (our young adult kids were in heaven here) and the crazy Shibuya Scramble Crossing that throws you into a moving mosh pit, along with the winding streets of themed cafes (cat, owl, hedgehog, French maid, micro pig) and tiny eateries. I also loved seeing the cherry tree festival in Ueno Park. We had a heck of a good time with Toshi and highly recommend his services.

Taking pictures and editing them with all the young girls fron schools

We did not have a tour with kota. It was Younes. He was a lovely young man and we had a lot of fun. He took us to places we couldn’t have found on our own.

One of the best days of our Japan trip

We had been to Nagasaki on a cruise 2 years ago and had seen the A-bomb sites, taken the Mt. Inasa ropeway to the Observatory and visited Glover Garden. So this time we wanted to see local life in Nagasaki and Sho was the abolutely perfect guide for that. Sho met us at the cruise terminal and we hopped in a taxi to go up into the hills to the Suwa Shrine. First we walked through the neighborhood where Sho lives, even stopping by his house, as he told us about life there. At the shrine, we happened upon a special performance of music and dance. This was apparently sponsored by another cruise ship that was also in Port as an excursion for their guests, but Sho had known about it so we got this nice surprise treat! We also met one of his friends who is a geisha, dressed beautifully for this event. We enjoyed the walk in this area, edpecially as Sho planned it so we were going downhill. Most of the places we went were not filled with tourists and crowds so we got to experience more of local life. Kofukuji temple was beautiful and we had a relaxing stop for matcha in peaceful surroundings. The observation deck at City hall provided great views with only a handful of other visitors - a few toddlers from the local nursery school. Sho took us to a place for delicious ramen, strolled us through local shopping streets and Chinatown, helped me find some high quality sencha green tea, and engaged us is interesting conversation throughout the day. As my husband said, this day we got to see the real Japan. And in the company of a fun, friendly, delightful young man.
