Kumamoto Castle is known for being one of the three great castles in Japan. Also known as Ginkgo Castle, the castle was built by Kato Kiyomasa in 1607. The castle's grounds cover about 980,000m2, with the outer circumference being about 9 kilometers (at the time of construction). The castle is made up of curving stone walls, a castle keep consisting of 3 towers, 49 turrets, 18 turret gates, and 29 castle gates.
The main keep was destroyed in a fire during a civil war in 1877. The current keep was rebuilt by Kumamoto City in 1960.
The castle grounds are home to 800 cherry blossom trees of 3 different species.
Kumamoto Castle was severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes. Access is currently restricted due to restoration work but, you can view the main keep and turrets from Ninomaru Park, Kato Shrine and the surround areas.
I will bring you to the local restaurant as following your request.
Built in 1632 by Lord Hosokawa, Suizenji Jojuen is a traditional Japanese garden. Notable features within the garden grounds include a traditional Japanese teahouse, where visitors can enjoy a cup of tea, a natural pond, and a miniature recreation of the Tokaido road, a well-traveled route in the Edo Period connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. You'll even see a small recreation of Mount Fuji. Other facilities worth mentioning include a shrine and lakes containing colorful koi fish.
This museum standing in the midst of a bamboo forest serenity exhibits nearly 1,000 antique works of art on Samurai-class cultures from medieval to modern period in Japan. These are a personal collection made by historian and researcher Mr. Matomi Shimada and are consisted of calligraphic works, weapons, armors, furnishings, articles in connection with Miyamoto Musashi, and many more. The annex has a picture gallery in it and is used for private exhibitions as well.
The Shimotori arcade is the largest shopping arcade in Kumamoto Prefecture. With excellent shopping, lots of places to have fun, and plenty of gourmet options, Shimotori is where people from all over Kumamoto come to let loose. With a combined length of 511 meters and a width of 15 meters, Shimotori is also often used as a location for music and art events throughout the year. Compared to the Kamitori arcade, Shimotori has many more bars and restaurants and has a much livelier night-life.

“Great guide ”
Mai-san opened up her schedule for us on short notice and was able to accomodate us to visit all 10 One Piece statues in one day. I highly recommend a guide such as her because some of the statues are hard to get to and the place where they sell the figures can be hard to figure out. She will help you get to them and help you buy them since she is a local, I can't recommend her enough if you are a One Piece fan!

“Best experience in Japan!!!”
Mai is the absolute best!!!! Not only does she make seeing all the one piece statues easy, she provides In Depth knowledge of the Kyushu region. It was so fun to learn about the rich history of Kumamoto. The country side is soooo beautiful and more people need to visit it. It’s indescribable. Mai is very accommodating, respectful, and fun! She made sure I was comfortable the whole time and even made time for us to get food. Speaking of which, please take her recommendations as she showed me the best ice cream I’ve ever had and best ramen I’ve ever had! She is so knowledgeable in so many things and really made the experience one of my favorites. I plan to reach out to Mai again the next time I’m back in Japan as this felt like I was really seeing Japan and seeing the beloved One Piece statues. Mai is also an expert in sake so please reach out to her about that as well! 本当にありがとう!

“5-star service!”
I rarely write reviews, however, this service was 5-star all the way. The One-Piece statue tour was phenomenal and we still had time to enjoy lunch at Mt. Aso. We decided to add a driver and a larger car (well worth the extra cost). Mai communicates very well and is extremely knowledgeable about the Kumamoto area (ask her about sake). My daughter and I spent a lovely day with this service. Thank you, Mai and GoWithGuide.
