Rokuō-in is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere, beautiful gardens, and classic Zen architecture. The temple grounds feature a pond, meticulously maintained gardens, and a path leading through a serene forested area, making it a peaceful retreat for meditation and reflection. Though not as widely visited as some of Kyoto's more famous temples, Rokuō-in offers a quiet, contemplative experience in harmony with nature, making it a hidden gem for visitors seeking a less crowded, spiritual space in Kyoto.

a small Buddhist temple

which emphasizes devotion to Amida Buddha and the practice of chanting the Nembutsu (念仏), meaning the recitation of the phrase "Namu Amida Butsu" as a path to enlightenment and rebirth in the Pure Land.

The temple features around 8,000 stone statues, called "Sentaijizo," donated by worshippers and believers for prayers and memorials. Each statue has its own unique expression and appearance, reflecting the individual prayers and wishes of those who placed them.

A lunch at special restaurant

This restaurant offers a scenic dining experience, allowing guests to enjoy the natural beauty while savoring seasonal dishes. The restaurant is well-regarded for preserving traditional cooking methods and providing a taste of authentic Japanese river cuisine in a serene and picturesque setting.

It is less known to tourists, making it a peaceful retreat for those seeking tranquility and a deeper connection to nature

One of the unique aspects of Jikishian is the “Words of Gratitude Path,” where visitors can inscribe messages of appreciation or thoughts on small wooden plaques that line the pathway, adding to the temple’s tranquil and reflective atmosphere. The temple’s secluded location and stunning natural surroundings make it a hidden gem for visitors looking for a quiet, contemplative experience.

"I'm walking" - discovering the hidden treasures of Kyoto

We had a marvelous day with Shin who just knows his stuff. Arrived early to pick us up, adjusted the schedule along our wishes, his experience and knowledge of the places off-the-beaten-track, his diving into history and personal views, they all together gave us a much better impression of this big and fascinating city. He took his time, we got some nice rests along the way (it was a muggy day), and finished up with a great dinner, all at places he had recommended. Visiting an antiques store has been a discovery, the incense store was a treat. Shin speaks excellent English and is super accommodating, what else can you ask for? We are very happy to have selected this tour and having Shin as our guide. Thank you!
