- We will meet at the Romancecar Ticket Counter at Shinjuku Station. The Romancecar counter is located in the Odakyu Department Store on the west side of the station. When you enter, head towards the Odakyu Line area, where you’ll find the Romancecar ticket counters. I'll be waiting near the counter to greet you. It's a clear and convenient spot, easily recognizable for starting our exciting journey to Hakone!
Travel from Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto
Journey from Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto:
Your adventure begins with a scenic train ride from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station, a journey of approximately 1.5 hours. If you take the Odakyu Romancecar, you’ll enjoy a comfortable, direct ride with panoramic views of the countryside. Alternatively, you can travel via Shinkansen to Odawara, followed by a transfer to the Hakone Tozan Train, taking you into the heart of Hakone. It’s a smooth, relaxing start to your day of exploration!
Hakone Open-Air Museum (~1 hour 15 min)
10:40 AM – After your scenic journey, we’ll board the Hakone Tozan Train at Hakone-Yumoto Station for a 35-minute ride to Chokoku-no-Mori Station. The train winds through beautiful mountain scenery, offering a glimpse of the lush surroundings and the stunning natural beauty of Hakone.
11:15 AM - 12:30 PM – Upon arrival at Chokoku-no-Mori Station, we’ll visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum, one of Japan’s most unique cultural attractions. This outdoor museum showcases an impressive collection of sculptures and artworks by both Japanese and international artists, set against the backdrop of Hakone’s picturesque landscape.
Stroll through expansive gardens featuring over 100 sculptures, including works by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, and Taro Okamoto. One of the highlights is the Picasso Pavilion, where you can see an extensive collection of Picasso’s paintings, ceramics, and sketches. The museum’s open-air exhibits provide a seamless fusion of art and nature, with sculptures integrated into the beautiful natural environment.
For a more relaxing experience, you can also enjoy the museum's foot bath, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains while you soak your feet. The museum offers a blend of art, nature, and relaxation, making it an ideal stop to immerse yourself in both creativity and the beauty of Hakone.
Owakudani Volcanic Valley
3. Owakudani Volcanic Valley (~50 min)
12:30 PM – After visiting the Open-Air Museum, we’ll take a short walk to Gora Station to board the Hakone Tozan Cable Car for a 10-minute ride to Sounzan Station. This cable car offers stunning views of the mountains and valleys, bringing you higher into the volcanic region of Hakone.
12:40 PM – At Sounzan Station, we’ll transfer to the Hakone Ropeway, which will take us on a 10-minute journey to Owakudani. As you ascend, enjoy panoramic views of the valley below, the surrounding volcanic landscapes, and, on clear days, a glimpse of Mount Fuji in the distance.
12:50 PM - 1:40 PM – Upon reaching Owakudani, you’ll be immersed in the active volcanic valley, where you can see geothermal activity at its most spectacular. The area is known for its hot springs, sulfur vents, and steam rising from the earth, creating a dramatic, otherworldly atmosphere. You’ll have the opportunity to take a photo stop and marvel at the striking volcanic landscape.
One of the unique experiences in Owakudani is trying the famous Kuro-tamago (black eggs). These hard-boiled eggs are cooked in the sulfuric hot springs, giving them a blackened shell, and are said to add seven years to your life! It’s a must-try snack while you take in the scenery and enjoy the natural beauty of the volcanic area.
Lake Ashi Pirate Ship Cruise

1:40 PM – After exploring the volcanic wonders of Owakudani, we’ll take the Hakone Ropeway for a 15-minute ride to Togendai Station, located on the shores of Lake Ashi. The ropeway offers scenic views of the lake, the surrounding mountains, and if the weather is clear, magnificent views of Mount Fuji.
1:55 PM – Upon arrival at Togendai, we’ll board the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, a fun and unique way to explore the beautiful Lake Ashi. The cruise is designed to resemble a pirate ship, adding a touch of adventure to your journey. The ship’s design is inspired by classic pirate ships, creating an atmosphere of excitement and fun.
2:05 PM - 2:55 PM – As we cruise across Lake Ashi, you’ll be treated to some of the most picturesque views in Japan. The serene waters of the lake are framed by lush green forests, with the towering presence of Mount Fuji in the distance (on clear days). The lake is also surrounded by ancient shrines and scenic hiking paths, making the views even more magical.
Feel free to relax on deck and take photos of the tranquil lake, the surrounding mountains, and the magnificent Mount Fuji (weather permitting). This leisurely cruise is a perfect way to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty of Hakone from a unique perspective.
Lunch in Motohakone
Lunch in Motohakone (~1 hour)
2:55 PM - 3:55 PM – After a scenic cruise across Lake Ashi, we’ll head to the picturesque town of Motohakone, known for its tranquil lakeside views and traditional Japanese atmosphere. Here, you’ll have the chance to enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the local restaurants, offering both traditional Japanese dishes and Western options.
Some of the local specialties you can try include:
Black eggs (Kuro-tamago) – While you’ve already sampled these in Owakudani, they’re often served in restaurants around Lake Ashi, sometimes as part of a meal or in a variety of dishes.
Tempura – Lightly battered and deep-fried vegetables or seafood, a classic favorite.
Soba – Buckwheat noodles, often served in a hot broth or cold with dipping sauce, perfect for a refreshing, light lunch.
Fresh Seafood – Hakone is known for its fresh fish, and many restaurants near Lake Ashi serve grilled fish or sashimi (raw fish), which is a great choice for seafood lovers.

Hakone Sekisho (Historical Site)

4:00 PM - 4:35 PM – After lunch, we’ll head to Hakone Sekisho, a historically significant site that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). Located along the Tokaido Road, which was the main route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, Hakone Sekisho was once a checkpoint where travelers and goods were carefully monitored by samurai officials. It played a vital role in controlling access to the capital and ensuring the stability of the shogunate.
Today, the Hakone Sekisho is a restored historical site that offers a glimpse into Japan’s past. You’ll have the chance to explore the reconstructed checkpoint, which includes the main guardhouse, the surrounding gates, and a small museum. The museum features exhibits about the history of the Tokaido Road, the role of the checkpoint, and the customs of the time, including the samurai who worked here and the travelers who passed through.
As you walk through the site, you’ll get a sense of the Edo period atmosphere, with traditional architecture and the feeling of stepping back in time. 4:35 PM – After a fascinating visit to Hakone Sekisho, we’ll take the Hakone Tozan Bus from the historical site back to Hakone-Yumoto Station. This scenic 40-minute bus ride winds through the mountains, offering one last opportunity to take in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, including forests, streams, and the distant peaks of Hakone.
5:15 PM – Upon arrival at Hakone-Yumoto Station, we’ll board the Odakyu Romancecar for the return journey to Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. The Romancecar offers a comfortable and efficient ride back, with panoramic windows allowing you to enjoy the mountain views as you descend into the bustling city. This 85-minute ride provides a relaxing end to the day’s adventure, with plenty of time to reflect on the amazing sights and experiences of Hakone.
6:40 PM – Arriving at Shinjuku Station, you’ll be back in the heart of Tokyo, where you can continue exploring the city or return to your hotel. The journey is smooth and comfortable, and you’ll leave with memories of a truly memorable day spent in the beautiful and historic Hakone region.
