Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is an iconic symbol of Kamakura, established by the renowned samurai Minamoto Yoritomo in 1063, when he founded the first shogunate government in Kamakura.

This shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war, whom Yoritomo chose to ensure spiritual protection for the city of Kamakura. Benten is a goddess from Hinduism, widely known in Japan as the goddess of music, performing arts, and eloquence. Legend has it that a wicked dragon once lived here, causing trouble for the people. Benten, however, defeated the dragon, helped him repent, and thus Enoshima was born.

There are three famous shrines on the island, each dedicated to a different goddess. As you climb Enoshima's mountain, you can visit each shrine, where deities related to water, abundance, and maritime safety are honored. These goddesses are also believed to bring blessings in love and beauty.
