In this 3-hour walking tour, explore the Minato Mirai waterfront, with highlights such as the Red Brick Warehouse, Zou-no-Hana Park, Ōsanbashi Pier, and the historic Nippon Maru sailing ship.

The tour follows a scenic route through Minato Mirai and Yokohama’s historic port area, allowing you to discover how Yokohama developed from an international port into a modern waterfront city.

Meeting Point

Hotel meet-up in Yokohama area, Ōsanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, or JR Sakuragicho Station (East Exit)

- I can meet you at your hotel in Yokohama. If you prefer to meet at a station, we can meet at JR Sakuragicho Station (East Exit), near the entrance to the Yokohama Air Cabin station. For cruise ship passengers, I can meet you at Ōsanbashi Pier.

Minato Mirai Moving Walkway

Walk along the Minato Mirai Moving Walkway, one of the longest urban moving walkways in Japan. This elevated pedestrian route conveniently connects Sakuragicho Station with the heart of the Minato Mirai district.

As we ride the moving walkway, you can enjoy open views of the modern waterfront cityscape. Along the way, we pass impressive landmarks such as the iconic Yokohama Landmark Tower and the elegant sailing ship Nippon Maru. You can also spot the large Ferris wheel at Yokohama Cosmo World, known as Cosmo Clock 21, one of the most recognizable symbols of the Minato Mirai skyline.

The walkway itself is a pleasant and relaxing way to experience the atmosphere of Minato Mirai. From above the streets, you can see the contrast between Yokohama’s historic port heritage and its modern skyline. It is also a great opportunity to take photos of the harbor area while comfortably moving through the district.

Sailing Ship Nippon Maru & Nippon Maru Memorial Park

See the elegant Nippon Maru, a historic training sailing ship built in 1930 to train young cadets for Japan’s merchant fleet. With its graceful white hull and four tall masts, the ship was affectionately known as the “Swan of the Pacific.”

From the Minato Mirai Moving Walkway, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the ship before walking closer to explore the surrounding memorial park.

The park also preserves an early 20th-century air compressor once used by the Yokohama Dock Company for shipbuilding and repairs. It offers an interesting glimpse into Yokohama’s industrial and maritime heritage.

Dockyard Garden

Dockyard Garden is a unique historic site located in the Minato Mirai district. It preserves the remains of a large stone dry dock that was completed in 1896 for shipbuilding at the former Yokohama Shipyard.

Today, the dock has been carefully restored and sits dramatically below ground level, surrounded by modern buildings. Visitors can walk down to the dock floor and see the massive stone walls up close, offering a vivid glimpse into Yokohama’s maritime and industrial history.

The site offers a fascinating blend of history and modern urban design.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse & Historic Port Area

Explore the historic Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, a landmark waterfront complex originally built in the early 20th century as customs warehouses. Today the beautifully restored buildings are filled with boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and event spaces, making it a lively place to stroll and enjoy the harbor atmosphere.

Around the warehouse, we will also discover several hidden pieces of Yokohama’s port history. Walk along the preserved platform of the Former Yokohama Port Station, once the gateway for passengers and goods arriving by ship and train.

Nearby, you can see the atmospheric Former Customs Office Ruins, remnants of a Gothic-style brick building destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.

While walking through the Red Brick Park area, you can enjoy harbor views and learn how Yokohama developed into one of Japan’s most important international port cities.

Zou-no-Hana Breakwater & Zou-no-Hana Park

Zou-no-Hana Park marks the historic birthplace of Yokohama Port. The name “Zou-no-Hana,” meaning “Elephant’s Nose,” comes from the curved shape of the breakwater, which resembles an elephant’s trunk when viewed from above.

When Japan opened its ports to international trade in 1859, Yokohama quickly grew into one of the country’s first international port cities. The breakwater helped protect the harbor and supported the development of overseas trade.

While walking through the park, visitors can also see the foundation ruins of the former Yokohama Customs Warehouse, built in 1914 and destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. These remains offer a glimpse into Yokohama’s early port infrastructure.

From this open waterfront area, you may also spot the famous “Three Towers of Yokohama,” nicknamed King, Queen, and Jack. A local legend says that visiting places where all three towers can be seen will bring good luck.

Today, the park is a relaxing waterfront space where visitors can enjoy harbor views, open lawns, and the modern Minato Mirai skyline.

The Yokohama International Passenger Terminal (Ōsanbashi Pier)

The terminal is one of Yokohama’s most iconic waterfront landmarks and welcomes cruise ships from around the world.

When viewed from the side, the roof of the terminal forms two gentle wave-like curves. The design is inspired by the movement of ocean waves and is often said to resemble the back of a whale floating on the water.

The architecture was carefully created to harmonize with the sea, the ships, and the surrounding port scenery. Its spacious wooden deck is perfect for a leisurely stroll, photography, or simply enjoying the sea breeze.

Admire the contrast between historic port buildings and modern skyscrapers while watching cruise ships arriving and departing.

“Mika is our hero...”

We arrived on a cruise ship and needed to get from the cruise terminal through Tokyo, ship our baggage onward to our hotel in Kurashiki, and then get train tickets and through the very complicated train station and to the correct platform for our train. Honestly, we had no ability to do any of that. Mika met us at the Tokyo international cruise terminal (instead of the previously expected yokahama terminal) a last minute arrival change. She got us through the whole process including several passages on the local metro trains. Along with escorting us all the way to the train door and doing a great job of getting us to our destination, Mila is also a delightful and informative travel companion. Note, this was not a simple canned tour but a challenging activity that Mika executed very well. We highly recommend Mika's work and plan to take a tour with her when we return to Tokyo.

Thank you, Robert-san, for your wonderful review! It was a wonderful experience for me to meet you both and see you off at Tokyo Station. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to meet such wonderful travelers like you. I was also fascinated to learn that you know about U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry. It was wonderful to discover that we share an interest in the history between the United States and Japan. Kurashiki is one of my favorite cities, and it reminds me of when I first started attending a tourist guide school in 2016. About a month after I started, I couldn’t remember the name of one of the cities mentioned in our textbook. I decided, “If I can’t remember the name of the city, I should visit it!” That city was Kurashiki. Kurashiki flourished through its textile industry, and some of the former industrial buildings have been beautifully renovated and preserved as museums. I was especially impressed by the story of the painter Kojima Torajiro. He became friends at school with the son of a wealthy textile industrialist, who later became his patron. Thanks to his patronage, Kojima Torajiro did not have to sell his artworks to make a living, and many of his works have been preserved in Kurashiki. I’m happy that I can enjoy Kojima Torajiro’s artworks when I visit Kurashiki. I hope you enjoy your time in Kurashiki! It is a beautiful and historic town that was chosen to host G7 ministerial meetings, welcoming delegates and ministers from around the world, including those from the United States.
