Born and bred in Tokyo I am still living in the suburbs of Tokyo. I spent several years in the U.S. and the UK and wanted to show international visitors around Japan in return for the hospitality I had received in foreign countries. We visit Mashiko village outskirt of Utsunomiya, capital of Tochigi prefecture. Making Mashiko famous is Hamada Shoji after he moved to Mashiko. Mashiko ware was for daily use ceramics like pots, plates as such. Therefore it was not really an art, initially but since Hamada Shoji settled in this village, practical utility and artistic beauty combine to make us comfortable life. Now Mashiko village accept a lot of artists from other area. Actually not only artists but entrepreneurs. You can enjoy nice Cafes in Mashiko. You can enjoy cups, plates using Mashiko ware and food itself is superb. So we visit this town and see museums and shops and also indigo dye factory. In Saimyoji temple, we can see a laughing King of Hell statue.

Nikko, "Must-see" spots in a day

Tochigi
8 hours 30 min

The charm of Nikko is that one can enjoy both the natural beauty of its mountains, lakes and waterfalls-sacred places to mountain ascetics since 8th century-and the magnificent craftsmanship of the Toshogu constructed by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Nikko can be reached from the Tokyo by train in about two hours. The area is famed for its beautiful autumn colors. 103 buildings belonging to the Toshogu and Futarasan shrines and Rinno-ji temple were registered as UNESCO World Heritate site in 1999.

4 days with Nao san

If you’re looking for something with perfect English who understands everything you say, then Nao is not for you. But if you’re looking for an excellent guide who will make your dream itineraries come true, then Nao san is for you. Nao is professional, flexible, and knowledgeable. He worked very hard so that I could see everything on my list in Tokyo, and even took us somewhere we didn’t expect: who knew there was a Statue of Liberty by Tokyo Harbor?!! The Tokyo National Park was closed when we got there, and he came back to Tokyo the next day to take us there. That’s above and beyond! In Nikko, he checked the boat schedule so that we had the time to see everything, and again, he made everything fit into our day. Thank you, Nao san, for an unforgettable expérience!

Kelly J.

Dear Kelly san I could feel releaved that you could enjoy my trip in Tokyo and Nikko. Thanks to you, I could know new sightseeing spots and broaden my horizons. Take are and cheers! Thanks. Nao

His easy-going personality made the entire experience enjoyable and relaxed.
