The warlord Minamoto Yoritomo took power from the imperial court in Kyoto and founded the first Samurai government in Kamakura in the late 12th century. Since then, the center of Japanese politics was moved to Kamakura from Kyoto. STILL NOW, you can feel Samurai spirit at its historic sites.

What to Expect

I am pleased to welcome you. As an experienced local guide living in Kamakura, I am committed to making you stay in Kamakura more impressive and memorable.

This is a 6-Hour Walking Tour that will enable you to feel the atmosphere of old Japan. We are scheduled to visit the following five(5)destinations;

1. Great Buddha

The Great Buddha is the symbol of Kamakura. It was built in the middle of the 13th century and is located in Kotokuin temple.

It is 13.35 meters tall including platform and weighs 121 tons.

Access: About 15 minutes walk from Hase station(Enoden, the local railway)

2. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shinto Shrine

The Tsurugaoka Shinto Shrine is located at the center of kamakura and is the most popular tourist destination in Kamakura.

The shrine was founded by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder of the first Samurai government system in Japan.

Access: About 10 minutes walk from Kamakura station, East Exit.

3. Hokokuji Temple

The Hokokuji is a Zen temple that was built in 1334. This temple is well known as the bamboo temple" for the beautiful bamboo grove in the garden.

The fragrance of bamboos and rays of sunshine poured through them bring refreshment and healing to visitors.

Access: About 10 minutes bus ride from Kamakura station.

4. Jomyouji Temple

This temple was built in 1188 and is always surrounded by the beautiful seasonal flowers. There is a dry landscape garden where rocks and trees

are set beautifully. There is also a Ceremonial Tea-House called "Kisen-an" where you can enjoy macha green tea. Why don't you chat with friends

or couples and relax while enjoying the macha green tea served at the peaceful Japanese garden.

Access: About 10 minutes bus ride from Kamakura station.

5. Komachi-dori Shopping Street

This is the most crowded street in kamakura, lined with souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes and shops dealing in traditional wooden carvings called

"kamakura bori". There are more than 200 shops and It is much fun to be just roaming around and looking at various shops.

Access: A vermillion torii, a symbolic shinto gate , near the East Exit of Kamakura station marks the start of the Komachi-dori Shopping Street.
