You can visit the old town area in Takayama with a friendly, Hida area Government-licensed Guide Interpreter. Walk around "Miyagawa Morning Market", where you can find locally grown foods and handcrafts. Koi (carp) fish welcome you. Experience the feel of "Takayama Festival" at the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall. Skilled artisans’ works, traditional structures seen in Takayama old town are must-see, too. Also why not try talking to locals? Your guide is more than happy to help you.

How about spending 1 day to visit both Takayama and Shirakawago? This tour departs from Takayama and we will spend first 2 hours in Takayama and then depart to Shirakawago for 3.5 hours walking tour. If the group is staying in Kanazawa for the night after the tour, it is not necessary to come back to Takayama.

Takayama ( old merchant town ) and Shirakawago ( UNESCO World Heritage site ) tour from Kanazawa
In the Edo period, for the first 107 years Takayama was ruled by the fuedal lord Kanamori. For the latter 177 years the Tokugawa Shogunate directly ruled Takayama. Takayama flourished as a merchant town since the Tokugawa ruling. Old merchant houses remain in Sannomachi district. The latticework windows are painted black Bengara color. Shirakawago villages was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. A Gassho farmhouse is difined as a thatched farmhouse with big slanted roofs. The name Gassho means the gesture when people bring their hands together in prayer. The shape of the roofs resemble the Gassho style. Most Gassho farmhouses have about 200 years history. There are 60 Gassho farmhouses in Shirakawago village. These houses are still used by owner family for their daily living. In the morning, we visit Shirakawago village. In the afternoon, we visit Takayama city.

“Two days with Kyohei”
Kyohei made our stay in Takayama and our car trip to Shirakawago with an additional tour the next day more than memorable. He was friendly, patient and reassuring at all times. We covered a huge amount of ground walking around Takayama, stopping for some shopping at places we would never have found. We had coffee in the morning at an out of the way place, which was perfect. We lunched at a fantastic restaurant we would never have found and he made really good recommendations for dinner that evening. His suggestion for an amazing bar for a nightcap was one of our highlights in Japan. He drove us to Shirakawago in his car the next day and showed us the sights before dropping us at our hotel. Because we wanted to change our bus departure time, he drove to the bus station and helped us buy tickets. Because we could only cancel our original tickets in line, he also did that for us as well. To cap it all off, he also rang our previous hotel back in Matsumoto to assist with a minor problem. Thank you, Kyohei, you were above and beyond.

We had an incredible day exploring Takayama and Shirakawago with Keith. Having already spent a day in Takayama on our own, we could really appreciate the difference Keith made to our experience.
