Meeting Point

Your hotel in Tokyo or major station (Tokyo, Shinbashi, Shinagaw, Shibuya, Shinjuku)

Transfer by train from Tokyo to Kamakura

It will take us about one hour to get from Tokyo to Kamakura Station. On the way, I will provide a short introduction to Kamakura’s important place in Japanese history and how it became the country’s first samurai capital.

Great Buddha of Kamakura

We will visit Kōtoku-in, home to the famous Great Buddha of Kamakura, one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. This impressive bronze statue of Amida Buddha stands over 13 meters tall and has watched over Kamakura since the 13th century. Originally sheltered inside a temple hall, the Buddha has stood in the open air for centuries after storms and tsunamis destroyed the original building. Here, we will admire the calm and powerful presence of the statue and learn about its history and spiritual significance in Japanese Buddhism.

Hase-dera temple

We will visit Hase-dera, one of Kamakura’s most beautiful temples, famous for its peaceful gardens, seasonal flowers, and panoramic views over the sea. Dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, the temple houses an impressive wooden statue believed to be one of the largest in Japan. As we explore the temple grounds, we will discover quiet pathways, small ponds, and hundreds of tiny Jizō statues, while enjoying the calm atmosphere of this hillside sanctuary. From the terrace, we will also have wonderful views across Kamakura and the coastline.

Hōkoku-ji zen temple (also known as "Bamboo Temple")

We will visit Hōkoku-ji, a peaceful Zen temple best known for its beautiful bamboo grove and tranquil atmosphere. Often called the “Bamboo Temple,” it offers a quiet retreat from the busier areas of Kamakura. We will stroll through the serene bamboo forest, enjoy the calm surroundings, and, if you wish, stop at the traditional teahouse to enjoy matcha while overlooking the grove. This visit gives us a chance to experience the meditative side of Zen Buddhism in one of Kamakura’s most atmospheric settings.

Sugimoto-dera

We will visit Sugimoto-dera, believed to be the oldest temple in Kamakura and one of its most peaceful hidden gems. Dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, the temple is known for its atmospheric moss-covered stone staircase and quiet setting surrounded by greenery. As we explore the historic wooden halls and tranquil grounds, we will experience a calmer, more intimate side of Kamakura, away from the larger crowds. This stop offers a glimpse into the city’s early spiritual history and timeless beauty.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

We will visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, the most important Shinto shrine in Kamakura and the symbolic heart of the city. Founded in the 11th century and closely connected to Kamakura’s samurai history, the shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the guardian deity of warriors. We will walk through the impressive shrine grounds, pass ponds and seasonal gardens, and climb the broad staircase to the main hall, which offers lovely views over the city. Here, we can experience both the spiritual atmosphere of an active place of worship and learn about Kamakura’s role as Japan’s medieval capital.

Komachi Street

We will stroll along Komachi Street, Kamakura’s lively shopping street connecting the station with the city’s spiritual center. Along the way, we can enjoy the atmosphere of old Kamakura, browse traditional shops and local crafts, and perhaps sample regional specialties such as shirasu snacks, matcha sweets, or freshly made rice crackers. This vibrant street offers a pleasant contrast to the temples and shrines we will visit, giving us a glimpse into everyday local culture as well as the city’s historic charm.

I speak four languages, including Japanese, and I enjoy meeting new people. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or requests.

Excellent Guide

Our family had an absolutely wonderful experience with Dmitrijs during my parents' recent trip to Tokyo. Since it was their first time navigating Japan, we wanted someone who could make them feel at ease, and Dmitrijs exceeded every expectation. He was incredibly kind, personable, and professional from start to finish. Beyond his deep knowledge of Tokyo’s history and culture, what really stood out was his ability to make my parents feel comfortable and confident in a completely new environment. He struck the perfect balance with the pacing of the tour—ensuring they saw the highlights without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Dmitrijs also went above and beyond by sitting down with them to review the rest of their Japan itinerary, offering invaluable local insights that helped shape the remainder of their trip. Most importantly, my parents enjoyed his company immensely; he wasn't just a guide, but a friendly face who made their visit truly special. If you are looking for a knowledgeable and thoughtful guide in Tokyo, we cannot recommend Dmitrijs highly enough!
