Just 15 minutes from Tokyo Station, time seems to stand still here.

Unlike much of Tokyo, Yanaka escaped major wartime destruction, preserving its narrow streets, wooden houses, and small local shops that evoke the atmosphere of “old Tokyo.” Together with Nezu and Sendagi, the area is known as Yanesen. Centered around Yanaka Cemetery, it is home to many Buddhist temples, the lively Yanaka Ginza shopping street, and family-run daifuku and senbei shops, cute street cafés and flower stores.

Meeting Point

Nippori station

Stroll along the cherry blossom–lined Sakura Street through the historic Yanaka Cemetery

Yanaka Cemetery is one of the oldest and most significant public cemeteries in Tokyo, and it houses the graves of many notable figures.

Along the way, you will also have the opportunity to learn about key Buddhist funeral rituals and traditions.

After leaving the cemetery area, we will explore a neighborhood of authentic old buildings, where you can find a local bakery, a traditional brewing house, and a contemporary art gallery. If you wish, we can stop and visit them.

There are also charming senbei (rice cracker) bakery, traditional daifuku shop, and cozy cafés nearby, along with other interesting spots. We can take our time to wander, pause, and enjoy the atmosphere as we go.

Stroll down toward Nezu Station

Stroll down to Nezu Station along a lively street that blends everyday local life with a nostalgic atmosphere. Lined with small shops, cafés, and traditional businesses, it offers a charming glimpse into old Tokyo.

Nezu Shrine

Nezu Shrine is one of Tokyo’s oldest Shinto shrines, known for its beautiful vermilion torii gates and peaceful, traditional atmosphere. Surrounded by lush greenery, it offers a quiet escape from the city and is especially famous for its vibrant azalea garden in spring.

Discover the Snake Street

Snake Street is a narrow, charming lane near Nezu Shrine, known for its nostalgic atmosphere and winding layout. Lined with small cafés, artisan shops, and traditional houses, it offers a quiet glimpse into old Tokyo and a pleasant stroll away from the city’s busier streets.

Yanaka Ginza shopping street

Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street stands out for its warm, nostalgic atmosphere and strong sense of local community. Unlike many modern shopping areas, it retains a traditional downtown feel, with family-run shops, handmade snacks, and friendly vendors.

One of its most distinctive features is the “Yūyake Dandan” (Sunset Steps) at the entrance, offering a beautiful view of the street—especially at sunset. The area is also known for its street food, such as freshly made croquettes, and its reputation as a “cat town,” with cat-themed goods and frequent feline sightings adding to its unique charm.

I have lived in Japan for 12 years so far, including 7 years in Tokyo and 5 years in Kamakura. I know these two places very well and would be glad to share my knowledge of Japanese history and culture with you.

I speak four languages, including Japanese, and I enjoy meeting new people. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or requests.

P.S. English is not my native language. I received a TOEFL iBT score of 108 many years ago, which corresponds to the advanced C1 level. However, there may still be some accent or occasional vocabulary slips. I appreciate your understanding :)

Reviews

Excellent Guide

Our family had an absolutely wonderful experience with Dmitrijs during my parents' recent trip to Tokyo. Since it was their first time navigating Japan, we wanted someone who could make them feel at ease, and Dmitrijs exceeded every expectation. He was incredibly kind, personable, and professional from start to finish. Beyond his deep knowledge of Tokyo’s history and culture, what really stood out was his ability to make my parents feel comfortable and confident in a completely new environment. He struck the perfect balance with the pacing of the tour—ensuring they saw the highlights without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Dmitrijs also went above and beyond by sitting down with them to review the rest of their Japan itinerary, offering invaluable local insights that helped shape the remainder of their trip. Most importantly, my parents enjoyed his company immensely; he wasn't just a guide, but a friendly face who made their visit truly special. If you are looking for a knowledgeable and thoughtful guide in Tokyo, we cannot recommend Dmitrijs highly enough!

Great introduction to Tokyo

Tokyo can be hard to navigate for the first time visitors, and this tour was really helpful. Dmitrijs was excellent: the tour was well-planned, he modified the amount of walking for us, was knowledgeable, flexible, tactful, and organized. We have seen many famous landmarks and learned a lot about the history and contemporary life of this vibrant city. His fluent Japanese came in handy in many situations. We are really thankful and can highly recommend him for both Russian and English-speaking tourists.
