Traditional Culture Tour in West Tokyo Residential Area
Witness an amazing blend of modern and ancient Japanese cultures through this West Tokyo tour. The suburb of hidden Futako-Tamagawa has been recently urbanized due to the population growth. However, some parts of the town are still conserved as significant Cultural Property, keeping the unique Japanese cultural vibes. Through this walking tour, you can visit traditional Japanese farmhouses in the Edo era, Joshinji temple, and other interesting places. Let’s discover Japanese culture together.
Meeting Point
Shibuya Station. Meeting at the visitor’s hotel is possible, but the meeting time will be earlier.
9:30 am - Old Farm House Garden at Okamoto Park: Experience the lifestyle of the locals in the late Edo era through a collection of a Nagasaki landlord’s traditional farmhouses. It also houses lots of rare daily items such as the spinning wheel and fireplace.
10:30 am - Okamoto Hachiman Shrine: Enjoy walking through the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere and visit a hidden small shrine.
11:30 am - Former Kosaka Residence: Located 700 meters away from the shrine, the traditional house of Mr. Kosaka is worth visiting. Get your camera ready for the splendid architectures and structures of the house, such as a well-designed roof and lovely tea room.
1:00 pm - Todoroki Valley: Escape from a busy world by strolling along a small stream with the narrow path surrounded by nature in Todoroki Valley. There are some interesting spots you can visit, such as shrines, cottages, and gardens.
2:00 pm - Joshinji Temple: Explore this peaceful Buddhist temple, founded 350 years ago with your own eyes. Feel overwhelmed by the traditional Japanese architecture and the three huge Buddha statues.
3:00 pm - Old Asakura House: Designated as a significant cultural property, the traditional Japanese rooms, and architecture, especially in the Taisho era, were still conserved in Old Asakura House. Enjoy exploring this Japanese house and learn more about the lifestyle of the people in the past!
4:00 pm - Daikanyama Area: After visiting a lot of historical places, it is time to enjoy strolling around the Daikanyama district, which has lots of cool and contemporary architecture and shopping malls, such as Hillside Terrace and Tsutays bookstore.
5:00 pm - End the tour at Shibuya Station

“Excellent, knowledgebale guide!”
Kazuo is really a gentleman, his English is excellent ,and his historical and cultural knowledge of Japan are excellent. Our group was 4 adults and we spent a day with Kazuo seeing incredible places hat would have been very hard to find by ourselves. Kazuo did a lot of research for our trip and he was an excellent guide. I would not hesitate to hire him again, and I highly recommend him! Lastly, our guide took us to a very reasonably priced Japanese restaurant that had very good food for about $10 a person. Kazuo really listens to what you say you want to do, and he is very flexible. We spent a whole day with him and will definitely book with him again!

According to these criteria, I gathered visiting sites in nearby area and stacked into the tour. As my prospect may have been rather optimistic, the time was nearly running out.
